Illinois (19-6-2, 58 pts.) returned to the ice well-rested after a week off, and it showed this weekend against McKendree (12-17-1, 35 pts.). The Illini shut out the Bearcats 3-0 on Friday before following up with a 4-2 victory on Saturday. With the sweep, Illinois improved to 4-0 against McKendree this season.

Cool under pressure

While the 3-0 final score looked dominant for Illinois, the game itself was much closer on the ice. The opening period was largely quiet until sophomore forward David Ras found the back of the net with just under four minutes remaining.

The second period featured no scoring, instead highlighted by a 2-2 split in penalties. That trend continued into the third, when Illinois’ graduate student defenseman Nick Andersen was assessed a major spearing penalty with a game misconduct. Despite the extended shorthanded stretch, the Illini remained composed and closed the door late.

“We did a great job killing off the major,” said head coach John Opilka. “Our penalty kill has been a strength for us this season and once again was up to the test.”

Illinois put the game away in the final minutes, as junior forward Anthony Varrassi and freshman defenseman Zack Huebsch added a pair of empty net goals to seal the shutout.

Offensive contributions up and down lineup

Saturday’s win was more conclusive for Illinois. Freshman forward Jacob Smagacz opened the scoring with the first goal of his collegiate career.

“It’s great Jacob has been working hard all season long and has earned every opportunity,” Opilka said. “Getting contributions up and down our lineup is important to our team’s success.”

McKendree sophomore forward Jacob Begich tied the game just over three minutes later, but Illinois responded quickly, as sophomore forward Louis Iandoli put the Illini back in front less than three minutes after that. Illinois extended its lead late in the second period when junior forward David Etingen scored his 15th goal of the season.

Graduate student forward Alexander Matveev added an insurance goal in the third, and despite a late McKendree tally, Illinois cruised to a 4-2 victory.

Sights set on Illinois State rematch

Illinois will remain home next weekend as it prepares to face Illinois State (14-13-2, 41 pts.), looking to avenge its October losses.

“Both games last time, we had trouble capitalizing on our chances,” Opilka said. “If we’re going to have success, we need to take advantage of our opportunities offensively and play our game.”
