The outages have since been mostly resolved, Eversource reported.
Stamford officials say a large American flag flew off the World Wrestling Entertainment building on Saturday night and landed on power lines.

According to Eversource's outage map, there were more than 4,000 outages in Greenwich and 2,700 in Stamford around 6 p.m. Sunday. About 45 minutes later, that number had dropped to 190 and 210, respectively, according to Eversource.

By early Monday morning, the power outages in Greenwich and Stamford mostly had been resolved, according to Eversource's outage tracker.
Stamford Deputy Fire Chief Matt Palmer confirmed the large flag was torn off the roof of the WWE headquarters at 8:44 p.m. Saturday. He said it became lodged on high-voltage wires adjacent to the Metro-North train tracks near the intersection of Atlantic and Manhattan streets near the Stamford Train Station.
Palmer said Engine 5 responded, but "there’s very little we could do other than monitor it and notify utility companies."

He said there was some arcing when the flag came in contact with power lines, but there was no fire when firefighters were at the scene.
The flag was removed early Sunday morning, Palmer said, and was severely damaged.
About 5,000 customers in Stamford lost power immediately when the flag became tangled in the lines, utility spokesperson Kaitlyn Woods said, but Eversource was able to restore power to about 3,000 of those customers within 20 minutes.

While crews were working to repair the affected transmission structure in Stamford on Sunday at about 1 p.m., there was a trip on the line that knocked out power to thousands of customers in Greenwich, Woods said.
"There are two separate transmission circuits on the structure," she said at about 2:15 p.m. Sunday. "While our crews were working to remove the flag, it shifted and made contact with the energized line that was keeping power flowing to our customers. The outage impacted more than 20,000 of our customers in Greenwich. Our crews just safely restored one of the lines in the past few minutes, and we'll start getting the power back on soon for our customers impacted."
Woods said the company has strict protocols about what is permitted on its infrastructure.
"Our crews were coordinating to remove the flag when it shifted on its own and made contact with the line that caused the outage," she said. "Approximately 40,000 of our customers were impacted this afternoon, and we isolated the outage, and restored power as quickly and safely as possible."

In an update around 6:30 p.m. police said the power outage had been restored.
