LeBron James is not only the oldest active NBA player—the cagey veteran has put in more than twice the number of spins around the sun as the league’s youngest baller, Cooper Flagg—he’s also its biggest draw. Such has been the case since James made his debut in 2003, and his return to the Eastern Seaboard should go a long way toward helping the NBA stave off a seemingly inevitable ratings slide this fall.
Discounting the NBA’s Christmas Day quintet, James’ Los Angeles Lakers appeared in the five most-watched regular-season telecasts of the 2025-26 campaign, and were the main attraction through the first two rounds of the playoffs. In relocating to Philadelphia, the four-time champion will bolster an already formidable Eastern Conference slate, which in turn should help boost the back ends of the national doubleheaders on NBC and ESPN.
While James’ workload may be somewhat diminished in Philly—2017-18 marked the last time he suited up for a full slate of 82 games—the Sixers are all but guaranteed to be featured in 34 national windows this season. That’s the NBA max, and marks a significant upgrade for a Philadelphia team that popped up in 14 coast-to-coast telecasts a year ago. James played in 60 regular-season games in 2025-26, good for 73% of the Lakers’ outings; should that percentage hold up throughout this coming season, the league’s media partners can expect LeBron to make 25 national appearances in his new threads.
James’ latest uniform swap coincides with a rare power shift in the NBA. Long dominated by the usual suspects in the Western Conference, the league saw an old-school Eastern power reemerge in the New York Knicks, winners of their first title in 53 years. In joining the Sixers, James teams up with Celtics transplant Jaylen Brown (a trade which itself triggered more than a few shockwaves Back East) and the star-crossed big man Joel Embiid, positioning the nation’s fifth-largest media market for a return to the national spotlight.
If James’ defection seems destined to peel casual NBA viewers away from the Lake Show, the subsequent heightened interest for the teams repping the I-95 megalopolis should go a long way toward helping shore up the league’s national deliveries. While regular-season NBA telecasts were up 16% to 1.78 million viewers across ESPN/ABC, NBCUniversal and Amazon’s Prime Video, the big year-over-year gains were in some part informed by the league’s newly enhanced exposure to broadcast TV. In swapping the basic-cable network TNT for big-reach NBC, the NBA reduced its dependence on a dwindling medium; in the last 10 years, 57.1 million bundled subscribers have cut the cord.
The boost in over-the-air exposure coincided with Nielsen’s upgrade of its ratings methodology, which gave rise to the enhanced monitoring of out-of-home deliveries and the integration of data captured via connected/smart TVs. While the Big Data + Panel tide raised pretty much every boat in the sports-TV waters, the year-to-year boosts notched by the likes of the NBA, NFL and NHL were likely a one-time phenomenon. Given that this fall’s ratings readouts will present what amounts to an apples-to-apples comparison with the year-ago period, overall Q4 sports deliveries are likely to be flat-to-slightly-down.
That said, lead-ins still matter, so any additional eyeballs that James’ Sixers can scare up in the 7:30 p.m. ET window should only serve to help set up the NBA’s West Coast slate. Barring an unforeseen spasm of further roster upheavals, the later windows will still feature the likes of Luka Dončić, Steph Curry, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Nikola Jokić and Victor Wembanyama, to name just a few of the luminaries who’ll be holding down the fort in the West.
The NBA generally targets the doldrums of mid-August for its annual schedule reveal, and James’ big announcement should ensure that Adam Silver’s office adheres to its usual timeline. During a July 16 appearance at the CNBC Sport x Boardroom Game Plan Summit in New York, the NBA commissioner effectively acknowledged that his team wouldn’t be in a position to finalize the 2026-27 schedule until James made his plans known.
“Where LeBron plays will affect the schedule,” Silver said. “I would like him to make his announcement already, so we can finish the schedule, because, as you might imagine, the teams are calling us, the networks are calling us, and everybody wants to lock in.”
Silver added that James’ whereabouts would have a significant impact on how the NBA builds out its opening week and Christmas slates.
Over the course of his Hall of Fame career, James has suited up for a record 20 Christmas Day NBA games, and Philly fans are certain to find him under the tree come December 25. The Sixers are no strangers to the annual holiday spree, having appeared in three of the last four Yuletide marathons. Including the 13 Christmas games the franchise played in under the old Syracuse Nationals banner, the Sixers organization has put in 35 holiday appearances since 1949, making it the NBA’s fourth most-frequent Christmas caroler behind only the Knicks (58 games), Lakers (52) and Celtics (38).
It’s not a done deal, but the smart money has the Knicks hosting the Sixers in the 7:30 p.m. ET primetime slot the day after Santa makes his way down the chimney. James’ former colleagues in LA are expected to square up with Curry and the Warriors in the final window.
Along with the Sixers, the Knicks are certain to be awarded the league max, repeating their 34-game national residence of a year ago. Across the East River and on the other end of the spectrum, the Brooklyn Nets may be granted a respite after last year’s disappearing act; while the NBA limited Joe Tsai’s team to just two national appearances in 2025-26 (down from five games during the previous season), any of Brooklyn’s 12 upcoming outings against the Knicks, Sixers and Celtics may be deemed worthy of a big TV date.
The NBA’s wheel of fortune never stops turning. As recently as 2017, Charles Barkley posed the not-at-all-hypothetical, “Hey Ernie, seriously, why are we showing the Knicks?” to Inside the NBA host Ernie Johnson. (At the time, the Knicks had cobbled together a 19-26 record.) Barkley hadn’t always been saddled by lackluster Knicks games; in 2010-11, New York was afforded a grand total of zero national TV dates.
If precedent is anything to go by, look for the NBA to unveil its 2026-27 schedule on Thursday, Aug. 13. Unlike years past, no teams will be entirely cordoned off from the Disney/NBCU/Amazon “airwaves”; under the league’s 11-year, $76 billion rights deal, the bare minimum for national appearances is now locked at two games per franchise.
