Every year, organizers work hard to create a unique theme for the show, a testament to their commitment, since most people would think the spectacle of an ‘80s and ‘90s event is a sufficient theme on its own. Past themes included a totally rad shopping mall while one used a period-correct summer camp as its base. Great stuff. This time, the team is taking thematic inspiration from Jurassic Park with its “Oblivion Park,” a place in which machines that once ruled the roads are revived for everyone to see. No word if Chef Alejandro has prepared any Chilean sea bass.

Showrunners start early in the year taking applications and carefully selecting the vehicles they think will make good additions to the event, particularly its indoor portion. Care is taken to curate a roster of rides that generally hew to stock appearance, or at least have period-correct modifications. That ‘91 Mustang at yer local car shows might be cool, but perhaps a bit less so if it’s been modified with modern components and bears little resemblance to what was introduced in Dearborn all those years ago.

Nostalgia has always been big business, from the syrupy Happy Days show to today’s punters shelling out big bucks at Barrett-Jackson auctions for a mint Acura Integra Type R. At heart, we all tend to look back at certain points of our lives with a tint of rose-coloured glasses, though there’s a great argument that most of us are now, as adults, simply able to buy the things we desired but couldn’t afford as teenagers or young adults. This phenomenon helps explain why a Mk IV Supra can now command well into the six figures.

Matthew Guy

Matthew Guy is a lifelong gearhead who writes automotive content for Canadian and American outlets. He is alternately described as a freelance author, podcast host, road test magnate, and legend in his own mind. As a member of AJAC, he enjoys sharing his excitement about cars and is very pleased to contribute at Driving.

EXPERIENCE

Matthew’s goal is to put readers in the driver’s seat for a unique and entertaining look at the automotive industry – whether penning vehicle reviews with a creative bent, travelling to manufacturer events for first drives of new models, or speaking with industry stakeholders to gain extra insight for an article During the past decade, he has enjoyed creating unique and creative long-distance adventure drives, sating his (and the reader’s) appetite for driving accomplishments like traversing the spartan wilds of Labrador. Timed challenges in speedy machines also spin his crank. For a spell, he was also behind the microphone for this site’s Truck Guy podcast, interviewing guests ranging from knowledgeable local technicians to world-famous television stars. Find out what it’s like to jump behind the wheel of a pickup truck and successfully tackle gnarly off-road courses. Ride along whilst tackling twisty roads along the Pacific Coast in a droptop convertible. Bundle up as he explores the frigid expanses of Canada from his home on the East Coast to venturing north of the Arctic Circle.
