As Assam heads to the assembly polls on April 9, 2026, wealth disclosures of candidates reveal sharp contrasts in their wealth profile. While the wealthiest have assets over ₹200 crore, the poorest have less than ₹1,000.

Rahul Roy of the INC leads the field in total declared assets, with immovable assets worth ₹251 crore and movable assets of ₹9.39 crore, taking his overall net worth to over ₹261 crore.

His immovable portfolio is dominated by extensive commercial and residential property in Hailakandi and Silchar in Assam, as well as properties in Kolkata. Commercial holdings alone account for over ₹123 crore, while residential properties are valued at nearly ₹88 crore. A large chunk of his non-agricultural land in Barakpar is valued at nearly ₹40 crore.

Mohammed Badruddin Ajmal of the AIUDF follows with total assets of ₹226 crore+, including immovable assets worth ₹173.56 crore and movable assets of ₹52.74 crore.

Ajmal’s disclosures reflect significant investments in business ventures and financial instruments. Over ₹11 crore in shares across companies, bank deposits exceeding ₹9.8 crore, and loans and advances aggregating more than ₹75 crore, including land advances and capital accounts. It also includes a vehicle fleet at over ₹2.16 crore, including BMW and Toyota models.

His immovable assets include high-value land parcels in Assam and Karnataka, including land in Devanahalli valued at nearly ₹98 crore, besides residential properties in Mumbai and Delhi.

businessline’s analysis shows that 20 per cent of candidates fielded by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) have declared assets of ₹10 crore or more, the highest proportion among major political parties in the fray.

Among key contenders, the Indian National Congress (INC) has 12 candidates in the ₹10 crore+ bracket, accounting for 12.1 per cent of its nominees. The All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) has two such candidates (6.7 per cent). While smaller parties such as the Bodoland Peoples Front (9 per cent) and Asom Gana Parishad (3.8 per cent) have one each in this category.

Beyond assets, the data also highlight other aspects of candidate profiles. Of the 722 candidates analysed, 102 (14 per cent) candidates have declared criminal cases, and 82 candidates face serious charges.

In terms of demographics, candidates aged between 41 and 60 years dominate the fray, accounting for nearly 60 per cent of the total. More than half of all candidates are graduates or above, including graduate professionals and post graduates. Women, however, remain underrepresented with just 60 candidates, 8 per cent of the total.
