There's no finer opportunity to discover the UK's breathtaking countryside than throughout the summer period.

When the weather cooperates, nothing quite compares to a sunny day spent outdoors in nature, immersed in magnificent scenery.

Just a stone's throw away from the Derbyshire/Staffordshire border in the Peak District is the curiously-named Lud's Church.

This 18-metre deep chasm formed by a massive landslip which took place millennia ago is found close to the village of Gradback.

The gorge extends approximately 100 metres and features verdant, moss-clad walls.

Above, the trees form a canopy, enhancing the otherworldly atmosphere while also keeping the gorge pleasantly cool during warm summer days, reports the Manchester Evening News.

Lud's Church has been labelled 'magical' by those who've explored it.

One reviewer, K "flower mum adventures" M, posted on Google: "Absolutely loved our visit to Lud's Church.

"Hidden away in the forest, this place genuinely feels like stepping into another world. The moss-covered walls, cool air, and narrow pathways through the chasm make it feel so magical and peaceful."

Fellow reviewer Rochelle wrote: "What a unique place to visit, a hidden gem. I went here on the back of a hike from the Roaches.

"Easy to get to and sign posted, good for all ages but very wet and muddy inside. Can get crowded sometimes."

The name Lud's Church dates back to the 15th century, when it served as a clandestine place of worship for the 'Lollards' - devotees of the early church reformer and alleged 'heretic' John Wycliffe.

It is reportedly named after Walter de Ludank or Walter de Lud-Auk, who was apprehended here during one of their gatherings.

Legend has it that the gorge served as a refuge for Robin Hood and his Merry Men.

It is also believed to be the inspiration behind the mediaeval poem Sir Gawain and the Green Knight - Gawain being one of King Arthur's fabled knights of the round table.

Lud's Church can be accessed via a walking trail from Gradback car park, approximately an hour's drive from Derby.

Parking spaces are scarce, so arriving early is advisable.

The walk through the gorge is relatively short, however be prepared for potentially muddy conditions underfoot, and note that it is unsuitable for those with restricted mobility, as there are several steps to navigate.
