Amazon is seeking to build a new final distribution warehouse in Gorham, a proposal that has divided the community. As the world’s largest retailer, Amazon is widely recognized by its delivery trucks and the packages delivered to homes around the world. Many Gorham residents opposed the initial plan. At a second DEP meeting in July, Amazon proposed several changes — including higher fences, berms, additional trees and a revised parking lot — to address residents’ concerns and gain Planning Board approval.
The Gorham site is not ideal, but Amazon’s willingness to respond was noteworthy.
Compare and contrast the Amazon efforts with that of the Brickyard quarry expansion. For almost three years, neighbors have been going to Town Council meetings complaining about adverse impacts from the quarry.
What has Shaw Brothers done to address these concerns? They planted a few little trees and pushed the town to approve quarry expansion. Even though Gorham is currently hiring a consultant to review outdated quarry ordinances. No fences, no berms, no trees, just more quarry. A quarry brings dust, blasting damage and excessive noise to hundreds of residents.
Why is the Shaw Brothers’ quarry being held to different standards than Amazon? Why is the local company allowed to put neighbors’ health and safety at risk, when Amazon is held to a different standard? How can Gorham continue to ignore the quarry impacts on local residents? Can Gorham also ignore the effect an Amazon warehouse will have on local traffic, on public health and safety?
