Seymour officials say John Hatfield, a member of the town's Board of Education, has resigned following his arrest at a Hartford Yard Goats game this month.

In an email, Seymour Board of Education Chair Kristen Bruno said John Hatfield submitted his resignation on Wednesday afternoon.

"We thank him for his years of service to the community and wish him well in the future," she said.

Hatfield's resignation was effective immediately and follows him resigning from a board seat at TEAM Inc., a Derby-based nonprofit that provides human services. 

The 40-year-old Seymour resident was arrested on misdemeanor charges of disorderly conduct and trespassing by Hartford police on July 11 at the Yard Goats game against the Binghamton Rumble Ponies. Also arrested in the incident was 57-year-old Frank Koshes, an Orange resident and police sergeant.

Park security told officers that the two men were intoxicated and Hatfield made inappropriate comments toward a group of juveniles, saying he would "bang" them, according to police. The underage girls were working at the Yard Goats' Team Store in the park, according to the police report. 

The two men later were told to leave the park at the request of security, but they refused, the report said.

Police said people with Koshes and Hatfield eventually convinced them to leave the property and officers escorted them to the sidewalk, where Koshes placed his hand on the Hartford police sergeant following another confrontation

In addition to serving on the Seymour Board of Education since November 2023, Hatfield is a teacher at Platt Technical High School in Milford.
