The third and final part of the Final Fantasy 7 remake trilogy, Final Fantasy 7 Revelation, is set to arrive in spring 2027. You're not mistaken, that is about a year before the last day Sony will be making physical PlayStation discs, so the game should be okay, right? Well, not quite.

Publisher Square Enix has apparently not made a decision whether to ship the game on disc or not, according to new information. Game director Naoki Hamaguchi, however, is pushing for it. The veteran director told GamesRadar+ at Final Fantasy 14 Fan Festival in Berlin that he can't confirm anything on that at the moment.

"We're still having internal discussions on what the exact SKU product lineup is going to be for Revelation," said Hamaguchi. "So I can't say anything particularly definitive at this point in time. But I am working to make the arrangements to allow us to have some kind of physical edition."

If the retail release of Final Fantasy 7 Revelation does end up skipping a physical disc, it certainly won't be the first game to do so. Even before Sony's nearly universally disliked decision to end PlayStation physical media, Rockstar announced that GTA 6 won't be shipping on a physical disc.

Assuming Final Fantasy 7 Revelation does ship in a proper physical version, can we expect each copy to include multiple discs? The two prior parts, Remake and Rebirth, both shipped on multiple discs so there's certainly precedent.

"Obviously, say, if you're talking to Nintendo, there's considerations about the storage limits on key cards and things like that, and then other platforms about how much you can put onto a disc," Hamaguchi explained.

"These are the discussions that we're having at this point in time. I do hope that we'll be able to come up with something that is as close as possible as to what players and fans are going to want, but you'll have to look forward to future announcements for that," he added.
