'Knifing each other': GOP goes haywire as Trump tantrums and Senate stalls

Дата публикации: 02-08-2026 18:24:30

Public fighting between President Donald Trump and Republican leaders are infuriating party members who say now isn't the time to throw tantrums. “We need to be talking up the wins, talking about how crazy Democrats are," a GOP senator told CNN Sunday. "Instead we are knifing each other."Frustrations stem from the growing feud between Trump and high-ranking Republicans over stalled MAGA initiatives they cannot or will not approve. Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-SD) has grown increasingly testy as he explains to reporters he cannot "wave a magic wand" and create the votes needed to pass the SAVE America Act, a non-citizen voting ban that critics warn is both redundant and dystopian. Meanwhile, Sens. John Cornyn (R-TX) and Thom Tillis (R-NC) have mounted a campaign to block acting Attorney Todd Blanche's confirmation until they receive written proof Trump's controversial $1.8 billion Anti-Weaponization Fund is "dead." Over the weekend, Trump about-faced and vowed he'd "push hard" to pass it — Tillis responded with a vow to block Blanche's confirmation. Both men hurled insults. "Senators Cornyn and Tillis [are] both upset because I wouldn’t Endorse them (they lost, and quit, respectively!)" wrote Trump on Truth social.Tillis called Trump's fund a "payout pot for punks."Worse still, the sudden death of Sen. Lindsey Graham denied Republicans a crucial diplomat able to communicate with both Thune and Trump. As tensions mount, Sen. Jim Justice (R-WV) issued a dire warning to his party ahead of midterm elections.“If you don’t watch out," he said, "you’re gonna make things much, much, much worse because we’re gonna lose seats."
