When the weather is hot and the sun is out, the last thing I feel like doing is spending hours fussing about what to wear. So every year I usually have a couple of default outfit formulas that I fall back on when heading out the door, which make it easy to get dressed whilst still looking well put together.
A staple of these outfits is usually a pair of denim shorts in various cuts or colours, because they go with everything from vest tops, T-shirts and linen shirts to trainers, boots and flip flops in an instant, depending on where I’m wearing them. However this year, a new style of shorts has caught my eye, and I wanted to see if they’re just as easy to wear as my fail-safe denim ones.
Lace-trimmed satin shorts are a big trend this summer, and at first glance they might seem a little on the dressy side for everyday wear. So I decided to test them out with five different styling options to see if they really are as versatile as a classic pair of denim shorts.

Country classicWhat I wore:
ASOS Design Satin And Lace Trim Shorts – £28.99
Lainey Wilson x Wrangler Work Dont Work Tee – £24.50 (was £35)
Durango Harness Boots – £169 (was £200)
Western style has been a major fashion influence over the last couple of years, and it turns out these shorts are the perfect way to make cowgirl look a little more couture. I paired them with an oversize T-shirt and some cowboy boots for an effortless look, but you could just as easily wear them with a denim waist coat or barn jacket to dial up the country feel.
Sporty chicWhat I wore:
New Look Black Satin Lace Trim Shorts – £13 (was £24.99)
H&M Boxy T-shirt – £8.50 (was £9.99)
ASOS X Adidas Originals SL 72 OG Trainers – £90 (now sold out, but this dalmatian print pair are a perfect alternative)
The Adidas running shorts have been a breakout hit for summer, but they very definitely land in the sporty style category, which can limit the ways to wear them. However this silky pair of shorts from New Look proves that you can still get that sports-luxe feel with a pair that are versatile enough to work across multiple different styles – just pair with some crew socks, fun trainers and a boxy-fitting T-shirt for a cool, casual look.
Let’s go to the beachWhat I wore:
ASOS Design Satin And Lace Trim Shorts – £28.99
Uniqlo Ribbed Cropped Sleeveless Bra Top – £19.90
Havaianas Over Puffed Up – £55
Roka Marylebone Tote Bag in Strawberry Stripe – £59.95
It’s summer, it’s hot, which means these shorts also need to work in a way that doesn’t rely on layers or oversized silhouettes, and it turns out, they do. The elasticated waist, loose fit and relaxed shape means they’re ideal for throwing on when you head to the pool or beach, and can be teamed with a fitted vest top, some flip flops and a tote bag for easy, breezy summer feels.
Smarten upWhat I wore:
New Look Black Satin Lace Trim Shorts – £13 (was £24.99)
Saint + Sofia Boyfriend Shirt – £109
White Stuff Bailey Buckle Sandal – £79
The days where you want to look a little smarter and more chic, but still want to stay cool and comfy in the heat call for a linen shirt and sandals, but rather than going too matchy with some linen shorts, try swapping them for a satin pair. The different textures instantly elevate it to a more luxurious looking style, and a chunky pair of sandals will ground it perfectly.
Autumn’s callingWhat I wore:
New Look Black Satin Lace Trim Shorts – £13 (was £24.99)
Anine Bing Logo-Embroidered Sweater – £265 (was £360)
H&M Braided Ballet Flats – £19.55 (was £22.99)
Dare I say it, but there are only a few weeks to go until autumn starts to creep in, and I’m all about finding ways to wear your favourite pieces throughout all of the seasons. The satin material is the perfect contrast for a chunky oversized knit, and some braided ballet flats are perfect for transitional weather, although a pair of knee high biker boots and some tights will work just as well when the temperatures really drop.
