South Central Railway (SCR) is awaiting final clearance from the Railway Board for the proposed 136-km railway line between Armoor and Adilabad, estimated to cost around ₹4,500 crore.

The project has moved a step closer to approval following the completion of the Final Location Survey (FLS), Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw informed a delegation of Telangana BJP MPs and MLAs when they met him in New Delhi last week and sought expedited clearance for the project.

Senior railway officials explained that Armoor station is located on the electrified Nizamabad-Karimnagar single-line section under the Secunderabad Division, while Adilabad falls on the electrified Mudkhed-Pimpalkhuti single-line section under the Nanded Division. The proposed Armoor-Adilabad line, designed for a permissible speed of 160 kmph, will pass through Nizamabad, Nirmal and Adilabad districts in northern Telangana. The project is expected to bring several major towns, including Balkonda, Bussapur, Nirmal and Ichoda, onto the railway map.

Officials said the line would provide rail connectivity to several unserved and remote areas of northern Telangana while improving access to Hyderabad. The project is also expected to serve as an alternative route to the existing Wadi-Secunderabad-Kazipet-Nagpur corridor, reducing the travel distance by nearly 50 km.

They pointed out that Armoor is one of the most economically vibrant centres in Nizamabad district, driven largely by agriculture and related commercial activities. Adilabad district, too, has a strong agricultural base and abundant forest resources, making the proposed rail link significant for regional economic development.

The railway line will also pass through Nirmal, renowned for its traditional wooden toys and handicrafts. Improved connectivity is expected to help artisans access wider markets across the country and revive the region’s centuries-old craft tradition.

According to officials, the project is also likely to boost education, tourism and healthcare services by improving mobility and logistics in the region. Enhanced connectivity is expected to spur economic activity and accelerate the development of several backward areas in northern Telangana.
