A man found slumped over the steering wheel in a vehicle stopped in the middle of a road in Surrey has been arrested.

Surrey Police Service spokesman Staff Sgt. Lindsey Houghton said police were called to near the intersection of 18 Avenue and 138 Street at 1:30 a.m. on Sunday morning with reports “that a driver of a vehicle was slumped over in their car that was stopped in the middle of the road.”

Houghton said that when police arrived, the first thing they did was use their vehicles to box in the car.

“The driver, who was the lone occupant of the vehicle, was found to be slumped over in the driver’s seat and unresponsive to SPS officers, despite repeated commands,” Houghton said.

“Officers were concerned the driver needed medical attention and as officers tried to take him into custody, the man regained consciousness and tried to start the vehicle and drive away, which was prevented by the police cars.”

Houghton said the man was taken into custody and an unloaded firearm, along with ammunition and three knives, were seized.

The man remains in custody pending charges.
