It's the season when, without the slightest pause, we all reach for a floral dress. They're almost a uniform at this time of year and especially in this heat. But let me stay your hand.

Yes, women of a certain age, rejoice, because the Pretty Woman dress is back!

That brown and cream polka dot number, worn by Vivian (played by Julia Roberts) to a polo match in an iconic scene in the 1990 film, is flying off the hangers in High Streets around Britain.

Roberts' wardrobe in the film has long been lauded. Costume designer Marilyn Vance created all of the looks from scratch, commissioning custom pieces and sourcing vintage garments from dealers across both the US and the UK. 

And while polka dots quietly reappear every few seasons, each time they somehow feel fresh again. 

From Kate Moss to the Princess of Wales, Marilyn Monroe to Elizabeth II, there's a long list of stylish women who have championed the print.

This year, however, it's Roberts' version that reigns supreme. Sitting perfectly between monochrome and overly colourful, these are the chocolate tones you want to wear now.

Topping many wish lists is Max Mara's Martina midi dress. Cut from 100 per cent silk, it's a pricey £705 on the label's website but as close to Julia's dress as you'll find. 

Frustratingly for some, it has repeatedly sold out. Customers report ordering the dress online only to receive an email days later informing them that due to 'quality control' issues – aka 'we've got none left' – the order had been cancelled.

One woman who managed to track down the dress in a top London store said: 'I was told it was the last one left in London. It was a size too big but I grabbed it. 

'The sales guy told me, "It's the dress of the season, we haven't been able to get enough".'

So what to do if you've missed out on the Martina? Boden has an £89 fit-and-flare version with a boat neckline and cinched waist, or Phase Eight, whose belted Lucinda Spot Midi Dress is currently on sale for £119.25. 

Mint Velvet also offers a cap-sleeve take, £170, with ruffle detailing, a deep V-neck and waterfall hemline.

Roberts as Vivian wore hers with gloves, white kitten heels and a straw sunhat trimmed with a matching band. 

I'd suggest a 21st-century tweak with simple ballet pumps or an elegant slingback if you want a slight heel. And no trainers of any kind allowed!
