If you thought the 90s denim revival was all about baggy, oversized jeans, think again. The latest silhouette making waves among the fashion crowd is actually sleek, narrow and effortlessly chic – meet the stovepipe jean.

Somewhere between a straight-leg and a skinny, stovepipes are narrow and straight through the leg but without tapering tightly at the ankle. Unlike wide-leg styles, they aren’t loose or flared, and the name comes from their cylindrical shape, reminiscent of a classic stovepipe.

Originally a 90s favourite, stovepipe jeans were the slim, minimalist alternative to straight-leg denim. Designers like Calvin Klein and Jil Sander helped popularise a ‘less is more’ approach to fashion and narrow jeans fit perfectly into that ethos.

On-screen and off, the style was everywhere: Jennifer Aniston as Rachel on Friends often paired them with cropped jackets, Kate Moss rocked them in her street style with crisp shirts and Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy made dark denim stovepipes look effortlessly chic with fitted tops.

The stovepipe silhouette is enjoying a full-blown resurgence

Fast-forward to 2026 and the stovepipe silhouette is enjoying a full-blown resurgence. Contemporary denim brands are leading the charge, with Khaite showcasing its slim, mid-rise Danielle jean and other narrow cuts for Spring/Summer 2026. Agolde and 7 for All Mankind, too, are keeping the aesthetic alive with stovepipe-inspired silhouettes.

It’s not just the luxe labels either. On the high street, the trend is everywhere: Arket, Mango and H&M are all offering narrow-leg denim that hits that perfect middle ground between retro charm and modern wearability. The appeal is simple: these jeans give off that 90s minimalism vibe without feeling dated.

So if you’re ready to embrace a leaner denim shape that’s the exact opposite of baggy jeans, stovepipes are where it’s at. Sleek, straight and a little nostalgic, they’re proving that sometimes, less really is more – and your denim rotation will thank you for it.
