We’ve reached the slow portion of the summer, and for NBA fans that means the rumor mill is running wild.

Stephen Curry’s future with the Golden State Warriors didn’t seem to be in question even after the Warriors suffered their first losing season since 2020 and missed the playoffs last season.

Yet traders at the prediction market site Kalshi have generated $3.5 million in trading volume on a prop predicting which team Curry will be playing for on Oct. 21 of this year.

The Warriors have the best odds to keep Curry at 91 percent — he’s due to make a league-high $62.5 million this upcoming season — with the Celtics (6 percent), Spurs (3 percent), and Hornets (2 percent) as the three other teams traders are buying.

The catalysts seem to be made-up trade scenarios on the internet for Curry to leave Golden State for greener pastures. On his July 26 podcast, Simmons talked about potential Curry trades to the Spurs and Hornets with co-host Joe House.

While both men agreed they didn’t think Curry was getting traded, Simmons proposed the idea of a package around De’Aaron Fox. On July 27, Sports Illustrated Celtics writer John Karalis also wrote a lengthy story on a made-up trade that would send Curry to the Celtics for Paul George, who was just traded to Boston in July, and Sam Hauser.

In both cases, there were huge spikes in trades for both teams at Kalshi for both teams within 24 hours of the podcast and article.

The Warriors trading Curry at all, let alone before the start of the upcoming season, would be one of the most stunning moves in NBA history.

Curry has been a Bay Area staple since he was drafted to the Warriors in 2009 and has won four championships with the team.

The Warriors did miss out on the LeBron James free agency sweepstakes and haven’t done much this offseason to make the team better outside of the draft, but Curry has maintained that he wants to retire with the Warriors.

We’ll see if more fake trades can push this market higher as the summer months continue.
