Apple has announced that Android and Windows devices, including Samsung Galaxy smartphones, will soon be able to participate in iCloud Shared Albums. The cross-platform capability was revealed during Apple’s WWDC 2026 event, marking an expansion of the company’s ecosystem services to competing platforms.

Historically, media sharing between Apple and non-Apple devices involved compression or third-party workarounds. The upcoming integration will allow Android and Windows users to join iCloud Shared Albums created by iPhone, iPad, or Mac owners. Participants will be able to view, download, and contribute photos and videos in full resolution, simplifying collaborative media sharing among friends and family using diverse hardware.

While Apple has not disclosed the exact technical implementation for mobile devices, the process is expected to rely on web-based access. Album owners will likely generate a secure invitation link, enabling Galaxy and other Android users to access the shared repository and upload their content via a web browser. For Windows environments, Apple may integrate these capabilities directly into its existing iCloud for Windows application, providing native functionality for desktop and laptop users.

This update represents a continuing shift in Apple’s strategy toward cross-platform compatibility, building on previous efforts to streamline file transfers and data sharing across different operating systems. The cross-platform iCloud Shared Albums feature is projected to launch alongside the public releases of iOS 27 and iPadOS 27, which are anticipated in September 2026.
