Wells Fargo (NYSE: WFC) is preparing to introduce tokenized deposits for its corporate and commercial customers later this year, marking another major bank’s move into blockchain technology for payments and settlements. The initiative aims to modernize how businesses handle funds while remaining firmly within the traditional, regulated banking system.

Tokenized deposits are digital representations of conventional commercial bank money recorded on a blockchain.

Unlike stablecoins, these tokens stay as liabilities of the bank and retain the same regulatory protections and deposit insurance eligibility as standard deposits.

When fully operational, the system will allow clients to transfer, program, and settle funds around the clock—24 hours a day, seven days a week, including weekends and holidays—without the usual constraints of batch processing cutoffs or limited wire transfer windows.

The bank plans a limited initial rollout this fall focused on US dollar to British pound exchanges for select participating corporate and commercial clients.

Expansion is scheduled throughout 2027 to include more customers, additional countries, and further currencies based on demand.

The solution will integrate into Wells Fargo’s existing client interfaces. Eligible payments will automatically route through the tokenized deposit system when doing so enhances speed, timing, or flexibility, so customers experience no change in how they interact with the bank.

Chief Financial Officer Mike Santomassimo described the move as an important step in broadening payment options, including on-chain solutions. He noted that tokenized deposits will enable clients to move money between accounts and across borders with greater ease and speed, building on the bank’s established infrastructure.

Future capabilities are expected to include always-on settlement for transfers between accounts, subsidiaries, or counterparties, and programmability through smart contracts that release funds based on predefined conditions.

The technology runs on Wells Fargo’s proprietary blockchain platform.

This infrastructure can support in-house custodial wallets and, in later stages, inter-chain connectivity to link with other networks.

The bank has indicated its system will be compatible with a broader industry-backed tokenized deposit network under development by The Clearing House, which involves several large U.S. banks and targets a 2027 launch, as well as other private blockchain networks.

This development places Wells Fargo alongside peers such as JPMorgan Chase and Citigroup, which already offer institutional tokenized deposit services.

Banks are increasingly adopting blockchain tools—from tokenized deposits to other digital asset applications—to improve efficiency in payments and settlements while competing with the rise of stablecoins and other crypto-related products.

By keeping the offerings inside the regulated and insured banking framework, institutions seek to deliver blockchain benefits without requiring clients to leave the traditional system.

Wells Fargo, one of the largest US banks by assets, continues to explore digital innovations.

The tokenized deposits program reflects a broader industry shift toward leveraging distributed ledger technology for operational advantages in treasury management, cross-border payments, and liquidity handling.

Clients stand to gain from continuous availability and greater flexibility, potentially reducing delays and costs associated with conventional banking hours and processes.

As the rollout progresses from a limited pilot to wider availability, the focus remains on delivering measurable improvements in speed and control while preserving the trust and stability associated with established bank deposits. Further details on additional features and market expansion will emerge as the program advances through 2027.
