A Welsh employer has fallen into administration. The London Mint Office Ltd, which runs a distribution centre in Tonypandy, Rhondda Cynon Taf, has named Michael Magnay and Jonny Marston of Alvarez and Marsal Europe LLP as joint administrators of the company.
The firm deals in historic, commemorative and collector coins and medals. A statement published on the company's website confirms that administrators were brought in on July 31
It reads: "On 31 July 2026, Michael Magnay and Jonny Marston of Alvarez and Marsal Europe LLP were appointed as joint administrators of The London Mint Office Limited in administration (the "Company").
"The joint administrator's encourage anyone who has an interest in the company's stock or assets to contact them on: INS_THLMOL@alvarezandmarsal.com".
"The affairs, business and property of the company are being managed by the joint administrators who act as agents of the company and without personal liability.", reports Wales Online.
The London Mint Office, which was established in 2006, describes itself on its websites as "one of the UK's most trusted suppliers of historic, commemorative and collector coins".
Rhondda MP Chris Bryant said he has been contacted by a number of employees following the London Mint Office's announcement.
"This is deeply worrying news for the workforce, their families and the wider community," he said. "My thoughts are with everyone affected at what will be an incredibly uncertain and anxious time."
The private company, which has a main office in London as well as a distribution centre in Wales, says on its Linkedin page that it employs between 51 to 200 people.
The most recently available accounts for the company state it employed 248 staff members in 2024. A large number of staff were based at the company's processing centre in Wales.
It's understood that the number of redundancies is 160 jobs, but the number of those in Wales has not been confirmed.
In 2018 the London Mint donated a collection of World War Two Dambusters briefing documents and a commemorative coin to Porthcawl Museum to highlight the area's historic ties to RAF operations. Fourteen of the 16 aircraft involved in the mission involved crew who had trained at RAF St Athan, in the Vale of Glamorgan, and RAF Stormy Down, near Pyle, Bridgend.
It is a private commercial distributor of commemorative medals and collector coins. It says on its website that it is a privately owned company established in 2006 and part of Samlerhuset AS, a Norwegian company which is also one of Europe's biggest distributors of commemorative coins and medals and the owner of the Norwegian Mint.
"Together with its sister organisations across Europe, The London Mint Office provides a wide range of coins from ancient to modern, originating from virtually every country in the world, and has no official connection to the UK government or the Royal Mint," it says on its website.
Chris Bryant MP said his office is making enquiries with the administrators to establish what support is being put in place for employees and "what the next steps will be".
He added: "I'll also be speaking with Rhondda Cynon Taf Council, the Department for Work and Pensions and other partners to ensure that every possible support is available.
"If redundancies are confirmed I'll be asking that a local jobs and recruitment event is organised as quickly as possible to help people find new employment and access advice and support."
Royal Mint, owned by HM Treasury and operated from premises in Llantrisant, is responsible for all official UK circulating coins and bullion.
