Alexander Patterson, who is widely considered the first Black pilot in the British military, is being celebrated in an exhibition. Born in Southampton in February 1892, he was the son of a Caribbean mariner and a white nurse.
Even though he began his career as an apprentice within the shipyards of Southampton, Patterson had already joined the Royal Flying Corps (RFC) by the time World War I commenced in 1914, according to the BBC.
Patterson’s grandson, Rex Patterson, has researched his life, which is now part of an exhibition at Reading Museum. Other Black airmen from that time and World War Two have also been featured in the exhibition.
Patterson, who initially trained to become a mechanical engineer, was awarded the Mons Star in 1914 before being promoted to the rank of sergeant the following year. Later, he became a sergeant pilot and subsequently a sergeant major. In 1917, he climbed to the rank of officer.
Patterson opened doors for other Black servicemen, with Rex’s father also serving during the Second World War.
But rising to the rank of officer affected his marriage. “It destroyed [Alexander’s] marriage; becoming an officer destroyed his marriage. He couldn’t assimilate with the old life at all.”
Even though Rex never had the chance to meet his grandfather in person, he said Patterson left a £1 ($1) premium bond for every one of his grandchildren during a rare visit to their family home.
Eugene Bullard was another hero highlighted in the exhibition. He was the only African American to serve as a pilot during World War I. The BBC reported that he was born in Georgia but stowed away on a ship for Europe and lived permanently in France.
In May 1917, he became a qualified military pilot in the French Air Service, but his attempt to enlist in the American Air Service was rejected because of the color of his skin.
In 1994, Bullard was posthumously commissioned as a second lieutenant in the U.S. Air Force.
