For generations of North Koreans, Choe Tok Sin was not merely a former South Korean general who defected to Pyongyang: He was a familiar figure from one of the country’s best-known propaganda film series, a onetime enemy commander recast as a patriot who ultimately found his way back to Kim Il Sung. 

Yet decades earlier, Choe was the only South Korean military representative in the room when the U.S.-led U.N. Command (UNC) confirmed the 1953 armistice to end the Korean War.
