Shortly after Apple’s CEO Tim Cook acknowledged that cost increases would soon be “inevitable”, the company have unveiled new pricing levels across the majority of their product range. As of 25 June 2026, almost the entire Mac and iPad line-up has been subjected to worldwide cost increases, along with a number of the company’s home and consumer devices.

The core reason cited for the increase is something that many manufacturers are experiencing: the construction and maintenance of AI data centres creating huge demands on the likes of RAM and storage components. Apple have addressed the issue in a statement, saying they have shielded customers for as long as possible, but the unprecedented price hikes have reached the point where they must pass the cost on to customers.

Most affected are the high-end Mac Studio models, with the M3 Ultra-equipped model now commanding $£1300 more than before the increase; as you’d expect, lower-spec and entry-level devices are less affected, but are not exempt — the newly introduced Macbook Neo has seen an increase of $£100, for example. The change has also impacted the iPad range, which has been subjected to increases of up to $£200 depending on size and spec.

While the prices of the iPhone and Apple Watch remain the same, many expect they will follow suit in the near future — perhaps when the range is next refreshed.

Of course, the trend isn’t exclusive to Apple by any means. All computer manufacturers are facing similar obstacles, and with components in short supply and the demand for data centres showing no signs of decreasing any time soon, it’s likely to be some time before prices become stable. Those who have been looking into purchasing new machines recently will certainly have noticed that base models are offering significantly lower specs than was the standard just a year or two ago, with high-end and flagship units commanding far higher prices.

Unfortunately, many experts are predicting that DRAM prices are likely to keep creeping up throughout this year and next, with others stating that the shortage could extend as far as the end of the decade. So it seems the problem will not be going away any time soon. Looking on the bright side, though, at least the vast majority of audio work is now relatively undemanding of processing power and system resources!
