A 40-acre data center campus proposed by Dallas developer Crow Holdings may spell the end of Dallas’ Market Hall building.
No closing date has been publicly announced. But the building, once touted as the world’s largest privately owned exhibition hall, appears to no longer serve its original purpose. The venue is no longer booking events. The last scheduled event is this weekend, and its future remains unclear.
Market Hall officials and city zoning records indicate the building is located on a series of parcels where Dallas-based Crow Holdings plans to build a 245-megawatt data center campus on 40 acres.
Crow Holdings declined to provide additional details about the future of Market Hall, including any potential demolition or repurposing. The 40-acre site spans from an empty field near Children’s Medical Center to the Market Hall. However, Crow Holdings said the nearby Renaissance Dallas Hotel is not included in the current redevelopment plans.
A bipartisan coalition on data center reform has pushed for a pause.
Texas Agriculture Commissioner Sid Miller said that speaks volumes.
“It is a Republican issue. It’s a Democrat issue. It’s a libertarian issue. It’s an everybody’s issue. When I go to these town hall meetings or rallies, everybody’s there,” Miller said.
Miller wants Gov. Greg Abbott to take action.
Market Hall officials and Dallas zoning records indicate the building is located on a series of parcels where Dallas-based Crow Holdings plans to build a 245-megawatt, multi-building data center development.
“The only other solution, obviously, is a special session. If we have to wait till the legislature comes in January, they don’t finish till June, laws don’t take effect till September 27th, so that’s over a year away. We don’t have a year. We’ve got to do something now,” Miller said.
Gov. Abbott’s office shared a statement with NBC 5: “Governor Abbott has been clear that data centers cannot come before Texas families. That is why he directed the Public Utilities Commission and ERCOT to require data centers to pay for their own infrastructure, bring their own power, reuse their own water, and lower residential electric bills… Governor Abbott will continue to work with the legislature to protect Texans and ensure their voices are heard.”
Dan Diorio, with the Data Center Coalition, told the Texas Senate Finance Committee on Monday that communities will benefit from these projects.
“They support a broad ecosystem of electricians, pipe fitters, HVAC technicians, manufacturers, suppliers, and small businesses throughout the state,” Diorio said.
In Red Oak, many residents continue expressing outrage over the rezoning of some 800 acres for the company Compass Datacenters.
Compass responded with a statement: “Compass pays its own way. We fund the grid and roads our campus needs so residents don’t, commit tens of millions of our own dollars to grid infrastructure… use zero city water for cooling, and manage noise… We’ve been committed to earning our place in Red Oak by listening and following through.”
Miller remains firm on his request for a special session.
“We need that. Abbot has the power to do it. He says he’s for the people. Let’s respond to the people and let’s do it,” Miller said.
Numbers show data centers in Texas have more than tripled in recent years.
