Following the death of the New York City police officer in the Dominican Republic during a cosmetic procedure, Rebecca De Paula’s family members are speaking about the difficult time they are going through.
Part of the family traveled with Officer Rebecca De Paula to the Dominican Republic, but News 4 managed to speak with Elena Santana, who was like a second mother to her.
In fact, the officer left her dog, Bambi, with her before leaving, telling her it would only be for two weeks.
“It feels like a light went out,” said the officer’s friend. “I’m devastated; I still have to sleep with medication; I can’t.”
De Paula died this weekend in the Dominican Republic after undergoing a cosmetic surgery procedure at a clinic in Santo Domingo.
The 31-year-old officer reportedly contracted a bacterial infection after the cosmetic surgery, according to her family.
“I knew she was going to the Dominican Republic, but I didn’t know she was going to have that procedure,” Santana told News 4.
De Paula leaves behind three children. She joined the NYPD in January 2015 and served in the 46th Precinct in the Bronx, where she was named Officer of the Month just four months ago.
The NYPD said in a statement:
“Our hearts are heavy with grief over the loss of our colleague, Officer Rebecca De Paula, who passed away off-duty after only 18 months on the force. We ask all New Yorkers to keep her family, friends, and colleagues in their prayers during this difficult time.”
In addition to her work with law enforcement, De Paula was a pastor. Her faith community kept her in their prayers on Wednesday.
“She was my pastor and friend,” Sailyng Schattuck said. “God used her to help each of us in the church. She always helped us to follow a better path.”
News 4 spoke by phone with one of De Paula’s brothers, who said that the officer’s body is in the Dominican Republic. They are coordinating with the NYPD to transfer it to New York City, where her loved ones will say their final goodbyes.
