You Shall Not Pass.

That’s the theme that former Maple Leafs goaltender Joseph Woll has chosen to use with his new black and orange mask with the Philadelphia Flyers.

Unveiled recently by artist David Gunnarsson (@daveart on Instagram), the mask is a tribute to the popular Lord of the Rings trilogy.

“Joseph felt that ‘You Shall Not Pass’ was the perfect theme for a goalie mask — because that is exactly the mission every night: Nothing gets through,” Gunnarsson posted on his website, daveart.com. “The design is a tribute … with the epic battle between Gandalf and the Balrog exploding across the mask in fire and darkness.

“The brick wall is an important theme for Joseph — the ultimate symbol of shutting of the door — while the mountains are another personal and important element for him. Both are woven into the LOTR universe and the overall design. One mask. One mission.”

The mask was gaining popularity across social media on Friday.

Traded to the Flyers in June with defenceman Simon Benoit for defenceman Emil Andrae, goalie Samuel Ersson and a 2026 draft pick, Woll is switching his number with his new club. After wearing No. 60 with the Leafs, Woll will don No. 53 with the Flyers.

Fans of Woll potentially won’t have to wait too long to see the mask at Scotiabank Arena, as the Flyers visit on Nov. 30 and again on Jan. 9.

In Toronto, meanwhile, the unveiling of the new mask for Sergei Bobrovsky has not yet happened.

The 37-year-old goaltender has sported plain white head gear and white pads through his first couple of practices with at Leafs training camp in Etobicoke.
