Racist, antisemitic graffiti found across San Carlos neighborhood

San Diego police are investigating racist and antisemitic graffiti spray-painted across three blocks of a San Carlos neighborhood, where residents woke up Thursday to find fences, cars and trucks covered in tags.
Neighbors near Lake Atlin Drive and Lake Angela Avenue said the vandalism included swastikas, other Nazi symbols and gang-related graffiti. Residents said it was the third nighttime tagging in the neighborhood in as many weeks.
For Lina Ghitmas, who is Jewish, seeing the Nazi symbols in her neighborhood was particularly upsetting.
“Swastika to me is forbidden, it’s bad,” Ghitmas said.
The repeated incidents have left her frightened.
“Scary, very scary, we’re being threatened all the time and now it is getting worse,” Ghitmas said.
The graffiti was found on fences surrounding homes, a concrete barrier and vehicles.
Jeffrey Szymanski said multiple properties were targeted.
“They hit this guy, they hit me, they hit a guy down the street,” Szymanski said of the graffiti.
Szymanski and his wife went to a hardware store on Friday to buy chemicals to remove the gang symbols painted on their fence. He said he did not know who might be responsible.
“It could be kids from the neighborhood. It could be people from other neighborhoods,” he said.
Neighbors said the hate speech has had the greatest impact on the community.
“You can see the sadness of everybody. It just kind of brought down the mood of the whole neighborhood,” Dean Jarmusch said.
The San Diego County Sheriff’s Office is urging people to immediately report any religious or race-based threats. The department also announced extra patrols at Jewish places of worship within the Sheriff’s Office jurisdiction around the Jewish high holy days.
Residents described the San Carlos neighborhood as a mix of races and religions. Despite that diversity, neighbors said the area has repeatedly been targeted by nighttime tagging in recent weeks.
“They are just hitting this neighborhood. It is really a shame,” he said.
The San Diego Police Department is handling the investigation. Police have not connected the vandalism to any other incidents or to the start of the Jewish high holy days.
“Whoever is doing this, please stop. You know there are a lot more things to do in life,” he said.
The neighborhood is in San Diego’s 7th City Council District. Councilmember Raul Campillo released the following statement condemning the act:
“On the eve of Rosh Hashanah, antisemitic tagging was found in San Carlos coupled with anti-black slurs as well. This is a completely abhorrent act. It is an attack on who we are as a City, trying to instill fear into communities. I full condemn any expression of antisemitism and racism in our city. San Diego is a welcoming place, and this does not reflect who we are or what we stand for.
I’ve been in contact with SDPD and a report has been made. People who vandalize property and who aim to perpetuate hate crimes must be held accountable to the fullest extend of the law. If you witness any antisemitic or racist behavior, please report it immediately.”
