Why has it been so humid in San Diego? Well, researchers say the warmer sea-surface temperatures they’ve been tracking for months might have something to do with it.
Scripps Institution of Oceanography at UC San Diego Research Meteorologist Alexander Gershunov is one of the scientists who have been keeping track of the marine heat wave since last year. As of Thursday, Sept. 10, just before 5 p.m., the sea-surface temperature observed at Scripps Pier reached 73.8 degrees Fahrenheit. The average is 68.8 F., according to Scripps at UCSD. According to National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), sea-surface temperature anomalies have been around 3 to 4 degrees F above normal for Southern California since the marine heat wave began in May 2025.
Gershunov said water evaporating from the warm ocean is adding more vapor to the atmosphere, while other sources of moisture have also contributed to the muggy conditions.
“That surface humidity is coming right from the ocean. But the humidity up at higher levels has been coming both from the monsoon earlier on and now it’s being advected from, tropical storm activity,” Gershunov said. “In the last few days, it’s been injected at mid and high-level humidity, advected from tropical storm that used to be Hurricane Marie. That has contributed even more to our nighttime temperatures not cooling off.”
The humidity can make it harder for temperatures to cool to comfortable levels after sunset. Gershunov described the overnight humidity as being like a thick blanket that prevents the surface from cooling, leaving San Diegans along the coast feeling the effects well into the night.
Suzy Metz described what those muggy nights have been like.
“We were just talking about how you lay in bed, and you have the fans on, and you have a washcloth on, and literally the moisture is just coming out of our bodies,” Metz said.
The persistent heat and humidity raise another question: Just how unusual have San Diego’s muggy conditions been this summer?
UC climate scientist Dr. Daniel Swain was recently quoted in a Los Angeles Times article about humidity in coastal Southern California, saying these are some of the highest humidities experienced in coastal Southern California.
According to Swain’s research platform, “Weather West,” through an informal analysis of Southern California coastal dew points, Swain found that this summer was the most humid in his analysis, which dates back to 1980.
The higher the dew point rises, the more moisture is in the air, which can indicate just how comfortable the air feels. According to the scale from the National Weather Service, less than 55 means it’s dry and comfortable, but between 55 and 65 is when it starts to feel sticky outside. Dewpoint temperatures above 65 can make the weather feel oppressive.
However, the NWS told NBC San Diego that NOAA does not collect climate data on relative humidity or dew points and was unable to confirm whether this summer’s humidity was record-breaking.
