Families of two brain dead persons have donated their kidneys, lungs, liver, and retinas to the needy.

The kidneys of 50-year-old Prakash Acharya, a resident of Kotekar, were retrieved at the Government Wenlock Hospital in Mangaluru on Saturday and soon after transplanted to patients at KMC Hospital in Manipal. The KMC Hospital, Attavar, Mangaluru, has stored his retinas in its eye bank.

The lungs of 21-year-old Kuthar resident Varshith were retrieved at the Yenepoya Medical College and Hospital in Deralakatte, Mangaluru, on September 16 and sent to a patient in KIMS Hospital, Electronics City, Bengaluru. His liver was transplanted to a patient admitted to the KMC Hospital in Manipal. Varshith’s right kidney was transplanted to a patient in A.J. Hospital and Research Centre in Mangaluru, while the left kidney was transplanted to another patient in the same hospital. In a statement, the hospital said this was the first time it retrieved lungs and a liver.

In a statement, Wenlock Hospital Superintendent D.S. Shivaprakash said Acharya was admitted to the hospital following a brain injury sustained after a fall in front of his house. It was on September 17 that Acharya was declared brain dead. Following the consent of family members to donate the organs, personnel from Jeevasarthakate, the body overseeing organ donation, had the organs retrieved by specialists and arranged to transplant them to the patients.

In another statement, Yenepoya Hospital said Varshith was admitted to the hospital on September 14 following a severe head injury in a road accident. He was in the intensive care unit and his condition remained critical despite efforts by the treating team. He was declared brain dead, and following consent by family members, Varshith’s organs were retrieved and transplanted.

The two hospitals lauded the family members for agreeing to donate the organs. They also appreciated the efforts of the treating doctors, nursing staff, and Jeevasarthakate personnel for their support in the retrieval and transplantation of organs. The work of the police in providing a green corridor for the quick transportation of retrieved organs was also appreciated by the hospitals.
