A recall of dips sold at Whole Foods has been upgraded to the FDA's highest warning level over potential deadly bacterial contamination. Earlier this month, Whole Foods issued a recall involving guacamole dips containing jalapenos sourced from Coast Citrus Distributors, a wholesale produce supplier in the US and Mexico linked to several recalls. Federal investigators had found the jalapenos were potentially contaminated with salmonella, a type of bacteria that causes bloody diarrhea. The Whole Foods recall included nearly 13,000 units of guacamole and pico de gallo dips sold in Arkansas, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Louisiana, Michigan, Missouri, Ohio, Oklahoma, Texas and Wisconsin. They have best-before and best-by dates ranging from August 7 to August 16, 2026. Now, the FDA has classified the recall as Class I, which represents 'a situation in which there is a reasonable probability that the use of, or exposure to, a violative product will cause serious adverse health consequences or death.' No illnesses have been reported in connection with the Whole Foods Market recall, but the multistate outbreak being investigated by the FDA and CDC has identified 431 illnesses in 32 states as of August 21. There have been 57 hospitalizations and no deaths reported.

Restaurants respond to jalapeno outbreak

Illnesses related to the contaminated jalapenos were initially reported between June 19 and August 2, with 203 out of 224 people interviewed saying they had eaten at a Mexican-style restaurant before their illness, including Chipotle and Qdoba. The two restaurants stopped serving the affected jalapenos after being notified of the outbreak, and the FDA and CDC have said there is no ongoing salmonella risk linked to these establishments.

Popular guacamole dips and salsas recalled

Affected products sold at Whole Foods include: Whole Foods Mild Guacamole Dip; Whole Foods Mild Guacamole Dip No Tomatoes; Whole Foods Spicy Guacamole Dip; Whole Foods Medium Pico de Gallo Guacamole Dip; Whole Foods Pomegranate Guacamole Dip; Whole Foods Roasted Corn Guacamole Dip; Whole Foods Trio Dip, containing Pico de Gallo, Guacamole, Salsa; and Whole Foods Mango Pineapple Salsa. A full list of the most recently recalled products and identifying codes linked to the salmonella outbreak can be found in the latest investigation update. It is not clear how the foods may have become contaminated with salmonella, but in previous cases this has been linked to irrigating crops with contaminated water.

Salmonella’s hidden dangers and severe risks

Salmonella can cause diarrhea, fever, stomach cramps and dehydration – symptoms that require medical attention, particularly for children under five, adults over 65 and those with weakened immune systems. The CDC estimates that Salmonella causes approximately 1.35 million infections, 26,500 hospitalizations, and 420 deaths in the US each year. While most cases resolve with supportive care, primarily hydration and rest, the bacteria's ability to survive stomach acid and invade intestinal cells makes it a powerful pathogen. In severe cases, the infection can escalate beyond the gastrointestinal tract. When Salmonella enters the bloodstream, a condition known as bacteremia, it can travel to other parts of the body and cause secondary infections.

Severe infections can cause lasting damage

These can include endocarditis, or infection of the heart valves; osteomyelitis, or bone infection; meningitis, or an infection of the membranes surrounding the brain and spinal cord; or septic arthritis, a joint infection. These invasive infections are particularly dangerous and require prompt treatment with antibiotics, often administered intravenously in a hospital setting. Invasive salmonellosis can also lead to long-term complications, even after the initial infection resolves. Some people develop reactive arthritis, a condition characterized by joint pain, eye inflammation, and painful urination that can persist for months or even years. Others may experience post-infectious irritable bowel syndrome, with chronic digestive issues stemming from the damage the bacteria caused to the intestinal lining during the acute phase of illness. Salmonella is resilient. It can survive on surfaces for weeks and is resistant to certain environmental stresses, making it difficult to eliminate completely from food manufacturing facilities. Because contaminated foods look, smell and taste completely normal, the only way to protect consumers is to remove them from the supply chain before they can be eaten. The FDA is urging consumers who have purchased the recalled products to immediately throw them away or return them to the place of purchase.
