The five-day long sit-in agitation by some farmers’ organisations demanding full crop loan waiver was withdrawn temporarily here on Saturday.

The farmers, who began the agitation at Samayapuram on the outskirts of the city on September 15, have been demanding that the State government waive the crop loans of farmers fully without any conditions/ restrictions.

Minister for Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowment S. Ramesh, Minister for Cooperatives V. Gandhiraj, Minister for Agriculture R. Vinod, who had held talks with the leaders of the organisations in Tiruchi on September, held another round of talks with the agitators on Saturday morning.

“The Ministers requested us to suspend the stir for 20 days in view of the by-elections and financial issues. We held discussions later in the day and decided to temporarily postpone the stir acceding to their request. If our demands were not conceded within 20 days we will resume the stir at the same place,” P. Ayyakannu, one of the farmers leaders who was part of the agitation, told The Hindu.
