Oklahoma City police are investigating the death of Ranesha Scyrus, 22, following a fatal auto-pedestrian collision that occurred in the evening of Sept. 10, according to reports from OKCFox, Atlanta Black Star and KFOR. A 17-year-old suspect has been arrested in connection to the tragic collision.

The incident happened on Thursday near the 3600 block of SW 3rd Street. Authorities say a 17-year-old driver was traveling northbound in a truck while recording a video when the vehicle struck an object he later told investigators he believed was a deer.

After the crash, the driver called his mother, who instructed him to come to her place of work. When he arrived, an adult female, later identified as Scyrus, was found in the bed of the truck. A 9-1-1 call was then placed.

According to Atlanta Black Star, police received the call at approximately 10:15 p.m., about two hours after the crash occurred. First responders arrived at the scene and initially believed they detected a pulse, but they were unable to revive Scyrus. She was treated by emergency personnel but was ultimately pronounced dead at the scene.

Per OKCFox, investigators believe Scyrus had been riding a scooter northbound on Rockwell when the truck struck her from behind. In a GoFundMe campaign with a fundraising goal of more than $6,000, her family said she was on her way home from work when tragedy struck.

Police said the 17-year-old driver showed signs of intoxication and was taken into custody. He was charged with manslaughter, driving under the influence and leaving the scene of a fatal accident.

“That’s pretty unusual, to have a body end up in the bed of a truck. So that’s certainly not something we see every day,” Master Sgt. Gary Knight with the Oklahoma City Police Department told KFOR, on Sept. 14.

Authorities said the teen admitted he had been using his phone to record a video when he struck Scyrus. Investigators also suspect he had been drinking.

“Police came to the scene, interviewed him. Obviously, looked at all the evidence involved. He showed signs of intoxication. He ended up being arrested that evening,” Sgt. Knight added.

According to KWTV, the teen faces charges of DUI, manslaughter and leaving the scene of a fatal accident. His bond has been set at $100,000.

Scyrus’ mother, Tameka Scyrus, said she wants the teen to be charged as an adult.

“I didn’t find out until she was already gone, like a day later,” the grieving mother told KWTV during an interview published Sept. 14. “She was gone. I can’t see her body.”

Tameka said she wishes her daughter had called her and asked her to come pick her up after work that night.

“I wish she would have said, ‘Mama, just come get me’,” she said. “I would have came.”

She also said Ranesha typically rode her scooter on the sidewalk, but the sidewalk ends shortly before the railroad tracks.

“So, what are people supposed to do?” she told the outlet. “Everybody don’t have cars.”

Tamika and her family have created a GoFundme to help with funeral arrangements and counseling as they work to heal from Ranesha’s passing. They described her as “a loving, caring daughter that anyone would be proud to have.”

“Ranesha was hit by a drunk driver, and in the heartbreaking hours that followed, the driver put Ranesha in his truck and drove around for two hours before calling the police,” the family penned. “By the time police reached them, Ranesha was pronounced dead. No family should ever have to face a loss this sudden and painful, and Tamika is now carrying the unimaginable grief of losing her daughter far too soon.”
