German semiconductor major Infineon Technologies is deepening its presence in India as the country pushes to build a larger role in the global chip supply chain, with CEO Jochen Hanebeck saying the company’s confidence in the market has “never been stronger”.

Speaking at the inaugural session of SEMICON India 2026 on Thursday, Hanebeck described India as a market of “tremendous importance” for Infineon, pointing to its expanding customer base, workforce and research and development footprint in the country.

“For Infineon, India is a market of tremendous importance. Today, we work with more than 1,200 customers across the country, ranging from startups to some of India's largest and most successful companies,” Hanebeck said.

He said India’s semiconductor ecosystem is entering a new phase, supported by the country’s economic growth, industrial ambitions and expanding technological capabilities.

Hanebeck said the pace at which India’s technology landscape is developing has stood out, with companies increasingly building solutions for the domestic market while also contributing to innovation globally.

Infineon, headquartered in Munich, has been operating in India for more than 25 years and has stepped up hiring as it expands its operations.

The semiconductor company increased its India workforce by 28% over the past year, taking its total headcount to more than 2,800 employees across Ahmedabad, Bengaluru and Hyderabad.

The expansion is also playing out across its facilities. Infineon has enlarged its Global Capability Centre in Ahmedabad, strengthened its research and development operations in Hyderabad and is setting up a new campus in Bengaluru, Hanebeck said.

The company is also looking to strengthen the talent pipeline for the semiconductor industry as India seeks to develop its domestic chip ecosystem.

Hanebeck announced that Infineon has partnered with the National Institute of Electronics and Information Technology (NIELIT) to establish a Centre of Excellence aimed at equipping engineers with industry-ready skills.

He stressed that building a sustainable semiconductor ecosystem would require cooperation beyond individual companies, with partnerships between industry, government and academia playing an important role.

The comments come as India seeks to expand its semiconductor capabilities and deepen its participation in the global chip value chain, spanning design, research, manufacturing and associated technologies.
