The White House has responded to a coverage standoff with the country’s major television networks by starting a broadcast channel of its own. It’s called Trump TV, and it streams around the clock.

Trump TV went live on YouTube at 7 p.m. Eastern on Monday, September 21, after the White House lost the usual television pool coverage of President Donald Trump’s events. The channel is embedded on the White House livestream page and promises videos, major remarks and highlights “streaming 24/7 and updated in real time.”

The standoff began when the White House barred CNN from its grounds and prevented the network from handling its assigned pool duties. ABC, CBS, Fox News and NBC then joined CNN in declining to provide designated pool coverage of the president.

Bryan Boughton, Fox News’ Washington bureau chief and the current TV pool chair, told members: “Effective today, the TV pool will not be covering events designated as pool coverage of the President. This follows the White House’s position preventing CNN from fulfilling its assigned pool duties.”

The impact was immediate. Monday’s White House feed had no audio when Trump appeared at a ribbon-cutting ceremony for the new White House helipad.

The five networks said in a joint statement: “The public has a vital interest in receiving accurate, independent information about its government. No administration should restrict a news organisation because it objects to its reporting.”

Hours before Trump TV launched, CNN, MSNOW and Politico filed a federal lawsuit against the White House. They argued that the ban violated their First Amendment rights by targeting coverage the president opposed, as well as their Fifth Amendment rights.

“This ban could not be a more direct assault on the First Amendment,” the outlets said in the filing. They’re asking a federal judge to temporarily block the ban and restore their reporters’ White House passes.

Trump defended the decision by calling the outlets “Fake News” and a “threat to democracy.”
