About two years ago I was put on different birth control pills because apparently you can get too old for some pills and it completely crashed my hormones. I had been living happily (I thought) on my old pills since I was a teenager but all of a sudden I got horrible bouts of depression that lasted weeks. I was told my hormones would level out after a few months but they didn’t and eventually it got so bad I started having suicidal thoughts that would vanish for about a week after I had my period and then start up again. I’ve always had periods of mild depression but I knew this wasn’t me and after three months of suicidal thoughts I stopped taking the pills. I didn’t go on something else, I just stopped. The thoughts scared me so much I didn’t even want to try other options because if the thoughts came back it wouldn’t be as easy as simply stopping my meds.My mood has never been better. Like, I thought I was doing fine on the old pills but even though I was doing better I wasn’t as “happy” as I am now.I mentioned it to a psychologist, making it clear that I didn’t have thoughts like that now that I had stopped taking the pills and she said “It makes sense. I’m pretty sure studies are currently being done into wether the high number of depressed teenage girls are related to birth control medications”Isn’t that crazy? I only realized it was the pills because it happened so late it in my life I knew myself well enough to pinpoint it had to be the birth control, but suicidal teens are just told it’s their natural hormones fucking with them?This isn’t anti-birth control btw. I wish I could just go back to taking the pills because I miss being able to control when I had my period and I envy anyone who has zero problems with the meds.I just think it’s worth considering that if you’re on birth control and nothing else has helped with your depression or suicidal thoughts, it could possibly be that.
