RCMP attend Dawson Creek playground after online video incident

RCMP confirm they attended a local Dawson Creek playground Monday – following a disturbance related to an online video circulation.

“Officers spoke with both parties involved, and the man seen in the video offered an apology. As is often the case, there were additional details not captured in the video that provided important context to investigators, although those details ultimately do not excuse the behaviour,” said RCMP officials the Postmedia Tuesday.

“The complainant was advised that, while the comments were inappropriate, they did not constitute a criminal offence,” said Corporal Jennifer Cooper.

RCMP officials noted while an initial call to service was received to prompt their attendance at the park after the incident in the video was recorded, no other calls were fields by staff.

“We do not currently have any record of any calls being fielded by the staff there.”

A video filmed in a Dawson Creek, B.C. park — telling a person described as mentally disabled to leave and ordering a newcomer to “go back to your country” — exploded across local social media Monday, drawing hundreds of shares and comments within hours.

The City of Dawson Creek rejected the message in the video, Monday, calling the statements completely contrary to what the community and its public spaces are supposed to represent.

“The City is aware of a video circulating in the community that includes statements suggesting that City parks are only for Canadian citizens and that people with disabilities or residents who have relocated to Dawson Creek from other countries do not belong in these public spaces,” the City said.

“The City strongly and unequivocally rejects these statements.”
