In early 1896, a meeting between two extraordinary personalities took place in New York: the Indian monk Swami Vivekananda and the Serbian-American inventor Nikola Tesla.
By that time, Vivekananda had already been in the United States for two and a half years following his triumphant address at the Parliament of Religions in Chicago (1893).
He lectured on Vedanta and Yoga, attracting the attention of the intellectual elite.
Tesla was at the height of his fame: he had created the alternating current system, was working on wireless energy transmission, and was searching for the fundamental laws of the universe.
On February 5, 1896, Vivekananda and Tesla met at a dinner at the home of Mrs. Austin Corbin (425 Fifth Avenue).
The evening was organized by Sarah Bernhardt, the famous French actress; she invited Vivekananda after noticing him in the audience during a performance of the play Iziel about the Buddha, in which she starred.
At the table, the conversation quickly moved beyond social pleasantries to the deepest questions of existence.
The famous inventor and researcher Nikola Tesla, who specialized in the study of electrical fields, was quite surprised to hear from Swami Vivekananda an explanation of Sankhya cosmogony as taught by the Hindus.
He was struck by the similarity between the interpretations of the concepts of matter and energy given by the teachings of Sankhya and modern physics.
Tesla invited Swami Vivekananda, several of his followers, and Sarah Bernhardt to visit his laboratory to demonstrate his experiments confirming the commonality of the principles of the spiritual and scientific worlds.
Here is how Vivekananda, the spiritual messenger of India, recalled his impressions: "This man is different from all Western people. He demonstrated his experiments with electricity, which he treats as a living creature, speaking to it and giving it orders. We are talking about a spiritual personality of the highest degree. There is no doubt that he possesses spirituality of the highest level and is in a position to recognize all our gods. In his multicolored electric lights, all our Gods appeared: Vishnu, Shiva, and I felt the presence of Brahma himself."
And further: "Mr. Tesla was charmed to hear about the Vedantic Prana and Akasha and the Kalpas, which according to him are the only theories modern science can entertain."
"The finest minds of today's science," Vivekananda later admitted, "often told me how wonderful and rational the judgements of Vedanta are. I personally knew one of them who hardly had time to eat or leave his laboratory, but nevertheless listened to my lectures on Vedanta for hours because, as he put it, they were so scientific and fully accorded with the aspirations of the age and the conclusions at which modern science was arriving in these present days."
On February 13, 1896, Vivekananda wrote a letter to his friend and disciple E. T. Sturdy, sharing his impressions:
"Mr. Tesla was charmed to hear about the Vedantic Prana and Akasha and the Kalpas, which according to him are the only theories modern science can entertain. Mr. Tesla thinks he can demonstrate mathematically that force and matter are reducible to potential energy. I am to go and see him next week to get this new mathematical demonstration. In that case, the Vedantic cosmology will be placed on the surest foundations."
In mid-February (roughly February 13–20), Vivekananda visited Tesla’s laboratory in the Puck Building in New York. The inventor showed him experiments with electricity and high frequencies, while Vivekananda continued to share Vedantic ideas.
The monk also sent a separate letter to Tesla (No. 357, Volume II of Letters of Swami Vivekananda), asking him to recommend reading material:
