Avery Tinker scored her second goal of the game on a penalty corner after regulation time expired, giving Cheverus a 4-3 win over Sanford/Kennebunk in a Class A South field hockey game Thursday in Portland.

The three-time defending state champions were in danger of losing for the first time since the 2022 state final when they fell behind 3-2 in the third quarter.

But Mary McCartney tied it without about four minutes remaining, and Tinker’s goal off a scramble in front of the net extended the Stags’ unbeaten streak to 59 games.

McCartney also finished with two goals, and Sydney Brunelle had two assists for Cheverus (5-0), the No. 1 team in the Varsity Maine Top 10.

Ella Tederous, Hailey Payeur and Reese Beaudoin scored and Faith Flynn made 11 saves for Sanford/Kennebunk (3-2), which is ranked No. 8 in the Varsity Maine poll. The Spartans lost their season opener in overtime against third-ranked Biddeford.

BIDDEFORD 3, GORHAM 0: Cordelia Kane, Aubrey Forcier and Emily Hussey scored to lead the Tigers (4-0) over the Rams (2-3) in Gorham.

Biddeford goalie Maddie Burton and Brooke Archambault combined for seven saves.

Eva Wendell stopped 14 shots for Gorham.

NOBLE 2, SOUTH PORTLAND/WESTBROOK 0: Erin Hale scored in the third quarter and Maddie Thompson added a goal in the fourth to lead the Knights (4-1) past the Blazin’ Riots (0-5) in North Berwick.

Mia Smith contributed an assist.

Vivian Lolar made five saves for South Portland/Westbrook.

WINDHAM 3, SCARBOROUGH 1: Hayley Johnsen scored twice in the second quarter, starting the Eagles (2-1) on their way to a win over the Red Storm (1-4) in Windham.

Scarborough’s Lily Howes cut the deficit to 2-1 late in the first half, but Mia Kri answered late in the third quarter of a penalty corner.

Kri also assisted on Johnsen’s first goal, and Julia Feeney got an assist on Kri’s goal.

Cassie Niles had an assist for Scarborough.

Windham goalie Courtney Cotter made five saves.

FALMOUTH 7, BONNY EAGLE 1: Lily Young and Izzie Camp both scored twice and Ani Bush recorded four assists as the Navigators (3-2) cruised to a win over the Scots (1-4) in Falmouth.

Siobhan Nielsen, Dani Henry and Lauren Hanson were the other Falmouth goal scorers.

Haley Labrie scored for Bonny Eagle.

FRYEBURG ACADEMY 1, YARMOUTH 0: Joao de Melo scored on a breakaway in the first half, Brady Egan stopped six shots, and the Raiders (4-1-1) knocked off the defending Class B state champion Clippers (2-1-1) in Fryeburg.

Everett Logan made four saves for Yarmouth, which is ranked No. 4 in the Varsity Maine Top 10.

LEAVITT 1, MORSE 1: Jacob Gibbs scored late in regulation as Leavitt (2-0-2) earned a draw with the Shipbuilders (1-2-1) in Bath.

Gibbs scored off a direct kick by Tyler Mates with 3:48 left.

Morse’s goal was scored by Milton Paulo on a breakaway with 10:11 to play in the first half.

WELLS 5, LAKE REGION 0: Aiden Barker scored twice, including a penalty kick, and Josiah Leighton made eight saves as the Warriors (1-4-1) defeated the Lakers (3-3) in Wells.

Luke LaPlante, Logan Desper and Blake Thibodeau were the other goal scorers.

PORTLAND 3, BIDDEFORD 0: Margaret Roma and Maizie Chalmers scored in the first half to start the Bulldogs (2-3-1) on their way to a win over the Tigers (0-4) in Biddeford.

Chalmers padded the lead in the second half, with an assist from Roma. She also assisted on Roma’s goal, and KC Lamontagne got an assist on Chalmers’ first goal.

LEAVITT 3, MORSE 2: Sophia Poulin scored from 25 yards out with 10 minutes remaining to give the Hornets (2-2) a Class B South victory over the Shipbuilders (2-3) in Turner.

Acadia Dunton and Lorelai Simard netted first-half goals for Leavitt, and Paige Booker had an assist. Goalie Jillian York made five saves.

Emma Wallace scored both of Morse’s goals in the first half, the first gave the Shipbuilders an early lead and the second tied the game at 2-2. Navah Weeman assisted on one of Wallace’s goals, and Hannah Keller stopped 10 shots.

BELFAST 4, MEDOMAK VALLEY 0: Stella McCarthy had two goals and an assist to lead the Lions (4-0) to a win over the Panthers (1-3) in Belfast.

Paisley Hayslip also scored.

Lilly Hills made 20 saves for Medomak Valley.

WESTBROOK 2, FALMOUTH 1: Ava Bolden scored twice, assisted by Hattie Clark and Ida Huntley, and the Blue Blazes (3-3) beat the Navigators (0-5) in Westbrook.

MONMOUTH ACADEMY 8, WISCASSET/BOOTHBAY 0: Lauren Burnham scored four goals and the Mustangs (3-1) rolled past Wiscasset/Boothbay (0-3-1) in Monmouth.

Julia Goucher added two goals and an assist. Addison Boisvert and Sophia Ennis each scored once.

Addy Eckert stopped 13 shots for Wiscasset/Boothbay.

GRAY-NEW GLOUCESTER 3, OLD ORCHARD BEACH 0: Ida Waterman and Ashley Anderson each recorded a goal and an assist to help the Patriots (1-3) beat the Seagulls (2-3) in Gray.

Bri Burbank also scored.

Amelia Gervais made four saves for the Seagulls.

YARMOUTH 3, FRYEBURG ACADEMY 0: Giselle Jabar scored two goals, Chloe Parker had three assists and the Clippers (5-0) handled the Raiders (2-3-1) in Yarmouth.

Lilah Pernal also scored. Julia Soelberg needed just one save for the shutout.

Emma Barriteau stopped 19 shots for Fryeburg.

BONNY EAGLE 0, SCARBOROUGH 0: Keona Ingram made 10 saves for Bonny Eagle (2-1-1) and Vera DiSotto got the clean sheet for the Red Storm (4-0-1) in a tie at Scarborough.

GORHAM 3, FALMOUTH 2: The three-time defending Class A champions won the final two sets for a comeback win over the host Navigators (1-3), 25-21, 21-25, 19-25, 25-20, 15-4.

Gorham, the No. 1 team in the Varsity Maine poll, is now 5-0.

Olive Clark led Falmouth with 19 kills, to go with 10 digs and three aces.
