An article said train tracks in the UK are stretched to avoid buckling so that they “do not have tension until the air temperature passes 27C”; this should have said that the stretching is carried out to avoid compression in the track until the rail temperature reaches 27C (How can Britain’s train tracks cope with extreme temperatures?, 28 August, p32).
