A 19-year-old man was killed early Wednesday when, police said, he was ambushed by two men who opened fire as he attempted to get into a ride share vehicle in West Philly's Overbrook section.

According to Philadelphia Police Department Chief Inspector Scott Small, the incident happened near the intersection of Wynnewood Road and Lansdowne Avenue at about 2:41 a.m. on Wednesday.

At that time, he said, a 19-year-old man was ready to get into an Uber vehicle when two unidentified gunmen arrived and opened fire.

The victim, he said, was struck multiple times in his chest and torso as dozens of shots were fired in this attack.

First responders to the scene transported the victim in this shooting to a nearby hospital where, Small said, he was pronounced at about 3:25 a.m.

Investigators recovered more than 40 spent shell casings at the scene, he said.

Small said that officers also found a backpack at the scene with a semi-automatic rifle in it near the victim's body.

"We don't know if the victim was in possession of that backpack. But, the backpack was laying right next to the victim when police picked up the victim and transported him to the hospital," said Small.

While the shots were being fired, the Uber driver sped off when his vehicle was struck by gunfire, said Small.

The victim did not make it into the vehicle before the shooting started and, Small said, the driver sped away and continued to the intersection of 52nd Street and Lancaster Avenue, about two miles away, before stopping the vehicle and flagging down a passing police vehicle.

"The Uber driver was not injured. He's very, very lucky with that many shots fired," said Small. "His vehicle was struck multiple times by gunfire. However, he was not struck by gunfire."

The Uber driver, Small said, was cooperating with the police investigation.

Investigators believe the victim was targeted shortly after he left a friend's house, according to Small.

Police did not immediately have a description of the shooters in this incident nor did they have a motive for the shooting.

But, Small said, the area had surveillance cameras along the block and investigators were reviewing footage for more information as the investigation was ongoing early Wednesday.
