Farmington’s police chief said he is very concerned about the theft of drugs stolen early Friday from a veterinary clinic that included several vials of Euthasol, a powerful drug used to euthanize domestic animals.

Chief Kenneth Charles said his office is working with state and federal law enforcement on the break-in at Falls Road Veterinary Clinic and the theft of several drugs.

“I can’t emphasize enough, the extreme danger that follows along with diversion of these dangerous drugs in our communities,” Charles wrote in a news release.  “Some are commonly mixed with heroin and/or fentanyl to exacerbate the effects, which are ‘NOT’ reversible using Narcan or Naloxone.”

“The potential danger to any person who may possess, handle, or consume this drug is significant and should be treated as a serious public safety concern,” he wrote regarding Euthasol, which is also known as pentobarbital.

A significant quantity of controlled medications, in both liquid and pill form, were stolen, Charles wrote. He did not release details on the other drugs taken.

“These medications are intended strictly for veterinary use and can be extremely dangerous, and potentially fatal, if used by anyone for whom they were not prescribed,” Charles wrote.

Many of the stolen medications may be sought by individuals struggling with substance use
disorder or used experimentally, he said. The substances can be especially dangerous when combined with alcohol, illegal drugs, or other prescription medications, he said.

The forced-entry burglary and theft was reported at 6:45 a.m. Friday at the clinic at 475 Farmington Falls Road, known as U.S. Route 2 and Route 27. Police have released no additional details on the break-in.

Farmington police are urging anyone who encounters these medications not to touch or consume them. Anyone with information on the case is asked to immediately call 207-778-6311.
