Connu comme l’un des membres les plus actifs du groupe Radiohead, l’Anglais Jonny Greenwood possède également une casquette plus secrète, celle de musicien pour l’image. Depuis There Will Be Blood en 2007, il est en effet le compositeur attitré de Paul Thomas Anderson, le réalisateur du très célébré Magnolia, sorti en 1999. Pour Phantom Thread, la tâche de Greenwood fut de taille, dans la mesure où sa partition est présente sur une grande partie du film, qui dure plus de deux heures. Elle enveloppe les images, tout comme le personnage principal (un couturier) passe son temps à couvrir le corps des femmes de ses créations. Mais cette musique fonctionne aussi comme une chape de plomb faisant écho aux tourments qui habitent continuellement le personnage incarné par Daniel Day-Lewis, lequel vit une histoire d’amour compliquée avec l’un de ses modèles (Vicky Krieps). Greenwood avoue s’être inspiré des Variations Goldberg de Bach enregistrées par Glenn Gould pour écrire sa partition. Au loin, on retrouve en effet le côté obsessionnel (la fameuse “basse obstinée”) de l’œuvre du compositeur allemand. Là encore, c’est le couturier angoissé que Greenwood tente de personnifier à travers sa musique.

Le film se situe dans le Londres mondain des années 50, et c’est donc aussi, plus simplement, la beauté surannée de cette époque que le réalisateur et son compositeur ont tenté de retranscrire. Le luxe dont a bénéficié Greenwood pour enregistrer sa partition (plus de 60 musiciens à sa disposition à Abbey Road) était sans doute la formule idéale pour coller à toute cette beauté. Parmi les morceaux les plus étincelants de l’album, citons House of Woodcock et surtout Phantom Thread I, dont les cordes en legato et particulièrement aiguës servent le glamour du film, ainsi que sa sourde tragédie. Toutefois, à l’occasion, Greenwood abandonne cette orchestration parfois écrasante pour se mettre au piano et interpréter, seul, des thèmes aux accents impressionnistes (I’ll Follow Tomorrow). Qu’il soit devant un grand orchestre ou un simple piano, le but de Jonny Greenwood est finalement le même que lorsqu’il travaille pour Radiohead : atteindre des sommets d’émotion. ©Nicolas Magenham/Qobuz
