It’s no secret that our feet carry the weight of our stability and steps throughout the day, making them prone to common ailments like plantar fasciitis, a condition characterized by pain at the bottom of the foot near the heel. When symptoms start, it can make it difficult to be on your feet and enjoy walking like you once did. That’s where the best sneakers for plantar fasciitis are necessary.

Plantar fasciitis occurs when the plantar fascia, a thick band of tissue on the bottom of the foot, gets irritated or overstretched. “This often happens due to too much pressure on the heel, tight calf muscles, flat feet, or high arches. Other causes include standing for long periods, sudden increases in activity, poor shoe support, or extra weight on the foot,” explains Dr. Nasim Kahlor, a board-certified foot and ankle surgeon (DPM) at Foot & Ankle Concepts, Inc. “Over time, this stress can create small tears and inflammation in the fascia, resulting in heel pain, especially in the morning or after sitting or resting for a while.”

How to choose the best sneakers for plantar fasciitis

Experts say that when choosing sneakers for plantar fasciitis, it’s important to pick ones that keep your feet properly aligned. “If you overpronate, opt for stability or motion control sneakers,” says Dr. Bobby Pourziaee DPM, “The High Heel Doctor” and board-certified foot and ankle surgeon. “If you have a high arch, choose cushioned, shock-absorbing models,” he adds. And it’s best to try on shoes at the end of the day, when your feet are slightly swollen, and to ensure there is “adequate room in the toe box,” Dr. Pourziaee adds.

What to Look for When Choosing a Sneaker for Plantar Fasciitis, According to Podiatrists

Supportive midsoles

Dr. Kahlor says to look for sneakers that have a supportive midsole. “Even though you want a harder sole, you still need to be able to absorb enough shock for the plantar fascia, so it is not overstretched,” she explains.

Arch support

Always check for arch support, which helps prevent over-pronation and can aggravate the plantar fascia. “You don’t want to wear a shoe where the material on the top is too hard, and the reason is that it can traumatize the nail bed, aggravating the plantar fasciitis,” Dr. Kahlor explains. “Trauma is the number one cause of fungal infections.”

A midsole that cannot bend or twist

According to Dr. Michelle Morse, a board-certified podiatric foot and ankle surgeon, the most essential feature of a shoe for plantar fasciitis is a midsole that cannot bend or twist. “I call this my ‘Twist and Shout Test’,” she notes. Think of it this way: If your shoes twist, your feet will eventually shout!

Stiff Soles

Dr. Kahlor also suggests shoes with stiffer soles. “A stiffer sole, which could also be known as shank inside, helps prevent too much flexing, which can help reduce the strain on the fascia,” she adds. “Another added plus is a well-cushioned heel, and a heel cup helps absorb impact where it’s needed most and keep the heel stable.”

What to Avoid When Choosing Sneakers for Plantar Fasciitis, According to Podiatrists

Flat Shoes

Dr. Morse warns against wearing shoes that are too flat. “Too flat a shoe with no heel-to-toe drop, and one where there is an ability to twist or bend in the middle.”

Shoes that allow your heel to sink

“Shoes that allow your heel to sink or tilt inward will worsen strain on the fascia,” Dr. Pourziaee explains.

Ones that are too squishy or flexible

Skip sneakers that are overly squishy or flexible, according to Dr. Kahlor. “Make sure the shoes are not too squishy or flexible because they will not support the heel and arch properly,” she says.

Best overall

Dr. Scholl’s Feel Good Lace-Up Sneakers

$130

Dr. Scholl’s Feel Good Lace-Up Sneakers are our best overall pick for everyday wear, thanks to their added arch support and cushioning. They feature a removable insole with Shock Guard Technology, along with arch support and heel cushioning designed to add comfort with every step. They also have a lightweight, flexible construction and come in both medium and wide widths.

Even better, the Feel Good sneakers have a classic lace-up design with a padded collar and soft knit tongue, helping them look more like an everyday sneaker than a strictly orthopedic shoe.

Most Popular

Hoka Bondi 9 Running Shoe

$175

“The Hoka Bondis are the first on my list as they check all the boxes: great stability, rocker sole to take even more tension off the plantar fascia, good heel-to-toe drop, and amazing cushion,” Dr. Morse says.

Most Durable

Brooks Adrenaline GTS Running Shoe

$155

Dr. Morse also recommends the Brooks Adrenaline GTS Running Shoe. These shoes offer even more support for overpronation. Dr. Morse explains that once people strengthen their foot intrinsic muscles and lengthen their calf, “I love to get people into wearing a variety of shoes, as no shoe is perfect, and our feet often get used to the positives, and the negatives are highlighted.”

“For example, if someone only wears a shoe with a high heel-to-toe drop and a rocker sole and does not stretch their calves, their calves will actually tighten up more, and they become more dependent on a shoe like this,” she adds.

Best Reflective Sneakers

Asics Gel Nimbus 27 Sneakers

$110 $165 33% off

This pair of shoes combines style and support for those with plantar fasciitis. Made with Asics’ Plus Eco cushioning for comfort and a Hybrid AsicsGrip for added traction, these shoes keep your feet safe and secure. They also feature a supportive collar and tongue and reflective details.

Best Arch Support

Vionic Walk Slim Glide Sneaker

$150

Dr. Kahlor suggests snagging a pair of Vionic’s walking shoes if you’re experiencing plantar fasciitis. The shoes are “performance-forward,” according to the brand, and include high-quality materials such as retro-inspired nylon and suede uppers. The sneakers are breathable and have a contoured Vio Flex footbed for all-day cushioning and stability.

11 Best Sneakers for Plantar Fasciitis, According to Podiatrists 2026

Best Splurge

New Balance 990v6

Dr. Pourziaee says these New Balance sneakers are “great for all-day wear,” as they’re durable, stable, and well-cushioned, with a firm heel counter. Plus, they look stylish paired with any outfit.

Best for Impact Absorption

Oofos Stride

$120

Dr. Kahlor also likes the Oofos Recovery Shoes for wearing around the house, plus they’re perfect for quick errands. The sneakers are made with the brand’s proven OOfoam technology, designed to absorb impact. They also have a plush heel strike and an easy toe-off to keep your form aligned and protect your joints.

Best for Stability

Asics Gel-Kayano

$170

This is the second pair of Asics to make our list, and for a good reason: They “provide a combination of stability and gel cushioning for heel comfort and midfoot support,” Dr. Pourziaee explains.

Best Cushioned

Saucony Guide 18

$70 $80 13% off

Podiatrists also recommend the Saucony Guide 18, which offers maximum cushioning for long-distance walking. The sneakers also have an innovative CenterPath that guides and supports your steps. There is also breathable mesh for improved airflow, along with a padded heel collar for a snug fit.

Best Budget

Skechers GO WALK Arch Fit 2.0

$85

If you’re shopping for supportive sneakers without spending a fortune, the Skechers GO WALK Arch Fit 2.0 is the most affordable option. The walking shoe features Skechers’ removable Arch Fit insole, designed to provide arch support and distribute pressure more evenly. It also has a lightweight, cushioned midsole and breathable mesh upper for walking, errands, and everyday wear.

Best for Midfoot Support

Mizuno Wave Inspire 22

$150

If you need a little extra support without giving up cushioning, the Mizuno Wave Inspire 22 is worth considering. The shoes are designed for runners with overpronation; they use Mizuno’s supportive Wave plate to help prevent the arch from collapsing and promote a smoother heel-to-toe transition. Its redesigned midsole features nitrogen-infused Mizuno Enerzy NXT foam for cushioning and energy return, while the breathable mesh upper helps keep the shoe comfortable.
