WASHINGTON D.C (VINnews) — A well-known cybercrime group said Tuesday it had broken into FBI-related systems and stolen personal information on current employees, former staff and job applicants.​

The group, which calls itself ShinyHunters, told reporters the stolen records include names, home addresses, phone numbers, dates of birth and, in some cases, information about spouses. It said the haul also included health-related data.​

A representative provided a sample of about 5,000 records. News organizations that reviewed portions of the file said some names, addresses and phone numbers appeared to match publicly available information and other leaked datasets. The FBI had not confirmed the authenticity of the records or the scope of any breach by late Tuesday.​

ShinyHunters also claimed it defaced the FBI’s jobs website, posting a mock “seized” notice that said all personally identifiable and health information had been taken. By Tuesday afternoon the site and the Special Agent Applicant Portal displayed messages saying they were unavailable.​

The attackers said they used a previously unknown flaw in Oracle PeopleSoft software to reach government cloud servers and downloaded two to three terabytes of data. They described the operation as retaliation rather than a classic ransom demand, saying they wanted the bureau to retract statements they called false. The FBI had issued no public comment on the claim.​

If verified, the exposure of home addresses and family details could put agents and their relatives at risk of harassment or targeting by criminals or foreign intelligence services. ShinyHunters has been linked this year to a series of attacks that exploited PeopleSoft systems at more than 100 organizations.​
