The Division 2: Echoes of Central Park brings agents back to New York with a darker tone, a returning companion system and some of the most challenging encounters the game has offered in years.

The Division 2, now in its seventh year since release, has just announced its third major expansion/DLC, Echoes of Central Park. Slated for a late 2026 release, with a full showcase and reveal scheduled for September 24th, Echoes of Central Park promises a darker and more suspenseful tone and will explore, for the first time, New York City’s iconic Central Park location, reimagined for The Division 2.

I recently had the opportunity to participate in a three-day preview event for the upcoming expansion, experiencing the opening moments of the new title along with a couple of missions and a small section of the overworld map. While I’ve been sworn to secrecy on specific details of the narrative or bosses I encountered, there are nonetheless a few pieces of the experience I’ve been greenlit to share.

The Setting

While The Division 2 is objectively the better game, I absolutely loved The Division 1‘s New York City setting. Since the previous two expansions/DLC, Warlords of New York and Battle for Brooklyn, and now Echoes of Central Park, all bring us back to the iconic city, I’m not alone in that sentiment. As the name would suggest, Echoes of Central Park sends agents to discover the source of a distress signal from within the Park.

“The most notable element of the setting and narration in Echoes of Central Park is how much darker and more suspenseful it is.”

The most notable element of the setting and narration in Echoes of Central Park is how much darker and more suspenseful it is. From the moment my character loaded into the preview, I had a sense of both dread and confusion as to what was really going on in the world around me. It honestly brought me back to the feelings I experienced watching the very first season of Stranger Things all those years ago.

While I cannot speak to the details of the story that I experienced, the shift in tone and narrative delivery is a welcome one, providing a sense of excitement and anticipation for what is coming. The preview did a solid job of balancing exposition with action, never slowing down the pace of the game to deliver long cinematics but providing enough content through shorter, focused cinematics and in-game comms relay to help give me just enough to keep me intrigued.

Gameplay and Map

Gameplay sees a bit of a shift with the companion system, first introduced in The Division 2 Season 3: Mutiny and subsequently removed at the end of that season, making its return for the new expansion. The preview event gave us three companions to choose from, each offering a different loadout and playstyle with upgrading and customization options available.

While there wasn’t enough time to do a deep dive into the system, it reminds me somewhat of the Mercenary system from Diablo IV, at least on the surface. What wasn’t clear during the test is whether you’ll be able to customize weapons or armour for the companions. Leaning into a more aggressive playstyle for my companion during testing, though, I found it a nice addition to have a teammate while soloing content. I’m excited to see how the team at Massive Entertainment handles the system.

“It’s a welcome level of challenge and one I hope continues throughout the campaign.”

Navigating the Upper West Side along Central Park is a fun treat as well. The map layout (at least the small part I was able to explore) offered plenty of nooks and crannies to explore, along with some great open areas for firefights. The map looks impressive too, with foliage consuming all the buildings around Central Park, giving the whole area a unique, mysterious vibe.

Two missions were available for the event and offer a nice, diverse mix of level layout and design. Each offered a few mini-boss-like encounters along the way and a level of difficulty I’ve not experienced in a while in The Division 2. While part of this challenge is that I was using a prebuilt character provided to me by Ubisoft, the actual boss arenas forced much more strategic combat, forcing me to rely as much on the layout of the space as the tech I had on hand.

The standard kiting and cover mechanics weren’t enough for this playthrough, forcing me to change up my strategy as some of the fights progressed. It’s a welcome level of challenge and one I hope continues throughout the campaign.

Final Thoughts

While I only had a few days to explore a small portion of what the new Echoes of Central Park has to offer, what I’ve experienced has me quite excited for its late 2026 launch. The companion system is promising, the narrative seems to be a creative departure from what has come before, and the setting is well designed and interesting to explore. This new expansion, coupled with the recently announced crossplay coming in November, is more than enough reason to dive back into The Division 2.
