The Jeep Grand Cherokee got a new engine for 2026, but it wasn’t the one everyone wanted. The new Hurricane inline-four produces a punchy 324 horsepower, but it lacks refinement. Now, the Grand Cherokee is set to get another new powertrain, and while the V-8 is still missing, the rumored arrival of the Hurricane inline-six promises the smooth delivery of even more muscle.

The report of a Hurricane inline-six-powered Grand Cherokee comes via Moparinsiders.com, which says its sources claim the new engine is coming for the 2028 model year. The Grand Cherokee will reportedly feature the standard-output version of the twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter six-cylinder, and not the high-output configuration. We’ve reached out to Jeep and will update this story if we hear back.

The standard-output Hurricane produces 420 horsepower and 468 pound-feet of torque in other Stellantis products, while the high-output variant is good for 550 hp and 531 pound-feet. The new six-cylinder engine could fill a gap in the lineup that has been missing since Jeep stopped offering the Hemi 5.7-liter V-8 in the Grand Cherokee; it would out-punch the V-8’s 360 horsepower and 390 pound-feet. The six-cylinder would also likely give the SUV more towing capability, which currently maxes out at 6200 pounds with the four-cylinder.

Sadly, it seems like a V-8 may not be returning in the Grand Cherokee, at least not without an SRT badge. Tim Kuniskis, who heads up Stellantis’ American brands, previously told The Drive that it “doesn’t make sense” to put the 5.7-liter Hemi back in the Grand Cherokee, with the automaker aiming to differentiate the personality between the Jeep SUV and the Dodge Durango. However, at Stellantis’ Investor Day this year, Jeep said that a Grand Cherokee SRT is coming, and we wouldn’t be shocked to see it powered by the supercharged 6.2-liter V-8.

For now, it seems that the more potent Grand Cherokee will get six cylinders, and it’s not a shock given that Jeep showed off a prototype Grand Cherokee with a modified version of the Hurricane inline-six in August. That car used the high-output version and a new system called eBoost Air, meant to eliminate turbo lag and theoretically push output to 640 hp, although we don’t expect to see that tech in the Grand Cherokee when it adds the Hurricane for 2028.
