Peterborough Petes general manager Mike Oke admits that players reassigned from the NHL to junior can often feel sorry for themselves and take time getting back up to speed.
The Vancouver Canucks, who used the No. 24 overall pick in June’s NHL draft to land Novotny, returned the 18-year-old winger to the Petes on Wednesday as part of paring down their roster. On Thursday, Novotny was electric in a 7-4 Peterborough win over the Sarnia Sting, totalling two goals, two assists and seven shots on net. He drove the play all night.
Novotny had 34 goals and 65 points with the Petes as an OHL rookie last season.
“He went to the Canucks training camp to earn a full-time spot with the team. That was his intent,” Oke said Friday morning. “He was disappointed when that didn’t happen, but, at the same time, he was equally excited to come back to Peterborough, and he didn’t miss a beat. He showed why he was one of the top players in last summer’s draft.
“Once the decision was made, he was excited to get back here with the team.”

The attitude and effort would seem to speak to Novotny’s mental makeup.
“He’s unbelievable,” Oke said. “I’ve been here 16 years. I’ve been involved in hockey for almost forever. Adam’s one of the most authentic, genuine players I’ve come across.”
Novotny told the Peterborough Examiner on Wednesday: “I’m back in Peterborough and my head has to be here now.”
Peterborough (1-2-0-0) visits the Brantford Bulldogs (2-0-0-0) on Friday.
The Petes finished fourth in the Eastern Conference regular season last year, thanks to a 40-24-1-3 mark. They lost in six games in the first round of the playoffs. Oke believes they have the pieces to go on an extended playoff run this time around.
