While bio-CNG plant is proposed to be built at ₹57.84 crore under Public-Private Partnership, waste-to-energy plant is proposed to be established jointly with the Coimbatore Corporation in the next two years
:
A bio-CNG plant to treat 200 tonnes of solid waste a day at a location in Palladam and a regional waste-to-energy plant have been projected as permanent solutions to manage solid waste of Tiruppur City Municipal Corporation in the recent report submitted by Tiruppur District Collector to the National Green Tribunal (NGT), Southern Zone.
The bio-CNG plant is proposed to be built at ₹57.84 crore under Public-Private Partnership, whereas the waste-to-energy plant is proposed to be established jointly with the Coimbatore City Municipal Corporation in the next two years.
District Collector Manish Narnaware, as the first respondent in a case filed by environmental activist Satish Kumar on pollution caused by dumping of municipal waste in abandoned quarries in Pongupalayam in Tiruppur North Taluk, submitted the comprehensive status report on how the issue was being handled and the way forward.
The District Collector said that dumping of municipal waste in the abandoned quarry sites had been completely stopped and cited an inspection carried out by the Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board on September 12, 2026. Unsegregated municipal waste previously deposited has been stabilised with protective soil cover to arrest odour nuisance and prevent vector breeding, the report stated.
Nearly 574 tonnes of municipal solid waste generated in the 60 wards of the city corporation was being treated through 24 micro composting centres, each processing 90 tonnes to 120 metric tonnes per day; a functional Material Recovery Facility (MRF) processing 50 tonnes of dry recyclable waste; and a bio-methanisation plant processing 15 tonnes of food and hotel waste a day.
Fifteen tonnes of poultry waste and ten tonnes of fish and hotel waste was being diverted every day to authorised private handlers and piggeries.
Two bulk waste generators were reprocessing 75 tonnes of waste a day, and three additional MRFs, each with 150 tonnes a day capacity at 15-Velampalayam, Kovilvazhi and Sundamedu have been tendered, and will be commissioned within 2-3 months, the District Collector said in the report.
A Detailed Project Report will be prepared for bio-mining of legacy waste and scientific treatment of leachate in the quarries, with requisite administrative and financial sanctions from the government, after receipt of the technical feasibility report from an expert team of the Centre of Environmental Studies, Anna University, the report said.
In a separate status report submitted to the NGT, Southern Zone, Commissioner of Tiruppur Corporation M.P. Amith, the third respondent in the case, said remediation was being proposed through scientific bio-mining since relocation of the legacy waste was presently not feasible.
