Fixed Pupils: Neurologic Finality vs Poetic Repair

In “Holding Hope,” the poem’s crux is not simply the devastating neurologic sign of “fixed pupils,” but also the way this medical phrase is transformed in the ear of the shocked sibling of a mortally wounded patient into the impossible mercy of healing: “[t]hey fixed his pupils.” The clinical distancing inherent in a bedside case presentation, reflexively performed before a disbelieving family member, is translated by a kind of poetic mishearing from incomprehensible loss into hopeful repair. The patient’s sibling seems to only grasp fragments of reality, while the physicians only offer partial truths. Even the clinician-speaker of the poem struggles with what can be held medically vs emotionally, the gasping lines and broken-up stanzas structurally reflecting the patient’s wounded brain and body and the heartbreak of both family member and physician. Yet poetry here does not really restore hope like some kind of harmless magic bullet, nor does it heal the lethal real-world gunshot wounds; more painfully, perhaps, it tries to reconcile brutal finality with the disconsolate wish it were not so. Thus the poem ultimately becomes an “antipresentation” of sorts, in which medical facts are melded with human truths, words can have double meanings, and what can be held is both the obligatory, dire prognosis and its denial. The insistence on what poetry can hear, and what no case presentation could ever convey, is reiterated in the poem’s final lines, expressed in the importunate paradox of the patient’s sibling’s repeated words: “…you heard/‘They fixed his pupils.’”
