This is not the first time the Regional Hospital has achieved a feat of this magnitude: indeed, in the final days of December 2025, it carried out a total of sixteen transplants in less than six days - thirteen kidney transplants and three liver transplants - with all that this entails in terms of organisation and management.

The Regional Hospital’s medical director, Abel García, thanked the healthcare professionals for the role they had played, “because without their high level of expertise, commitment and dedication to serving our public health service, it would not be possible to achieve these results”.

He also acknowledged “the extraordinary work carried out by the transplant coordinators during an extremely intense period, as well as the support provided by the Andalusian Regional Transplant Coordination Service (CATA), which was essential to the smooth running of these processes.”

These nine transplants involved specialists from the departments of Nephrology, Urology, Hepatology, Hepatobiliopancreatic Surgery, Anaesthetology, Intensive Care, Laboratory and Diagnostic Imaging, as well as nursing staff and other support services.

This year, 186 transplants have been carried out at the Regional Hospital: 134 kidney transplants in adults, 44 liver transplants and eight pancreas transplants. Care for these patients begins with their assessment and preparation and continues with specialist follow-up care, with the aim of improving their quality of life.

The Regional Hospital (formerly known as Carlos Haya) carried out a total of 284 transplants in 2025, making it the second-largest healthcare centre in Andalucía in terms of the volume of such procedures, surpassed only by the Reina Sofía Hospital in Cordoba, which carried out 306.

However, the number of transplants at the Regional Hospital has fallen by 15.7 per cent compared with the 337 carried out in 2024, a landmark year for the Malaga hospital, as it became the hospital that performed the most kidney transplants in the whole of Spain.

According to the regional ministry of health, the hospital in Malaga carried out 206 kidney transplants, 67 liver transplants and 11 pancreas transplants. In 2024, the figures for the former Carlos Haya Hospital were as follows: 337 transplants - almost one a day - representing a 20 per cent increase on 2023. Of these, 85 were liver transplants, 10 were pancreas transplants and 242 were kidney transplants.

By hospital, the Reina Sofía in Cordoba tops the rankings with 306 transplants, of which 108 were kidney transplants, 98 lung transplants, 66 liver transplants, 27 heart transplants and seven pancreas transplants. Next comes the Regional Hospital, followed by the Virgen del Rocío Hospital in Seville (267 transplants: 169 kidney, 77 liver and 21 heart), the Puerta del Mar Hospital in Cadiz (141 kidney transplants) and bringing up the rear is the Virgen de las Nieves Hospital in Granada (115 transplants, 79 kidney and 36 liver).

Furthermore, as of 11 September 2026, 67 organ donors have been recorded in the province, 31 of whom were from the Regional Hospital, a healthcare complex which has thanked the donors for their act of solidarity at such a difficult time as the loss of a loved one.

According to the report on organ donation and transplants published by Spain's ministry of health in 2025, four Andalusian hospitals (Torrecárdenas, Virgen de la Victoria, Virgen Macarena and Juan Ramón Jiménez) are among the top ten hospitals without a transplant programme that have the highest level of organ donation from deceased donors.

Andalucía continues to break records in the field of organ and tissue donation and transplants. In 2025, a total of 875 donors were recorded for organs (471) and tissues (404), “the highest figure in the entire historical record”, as reported today by the regional minister for health, Antonio Sanz, during a visit to Cazorla (Jaén).

Furthermore, the region has once again recorded the highest absolute number of organ donors in Spain (471), according to the annual report on donation and transplants presented by the ministry of health and the National Transplant Organisation (ONT). The donation rate in Andalucía stands at 54.4 donors per million population (p.m.p.), almost three points above the national average of 51.9.

“This is the highest rate among the country’s three most populous regions, standing around 10 points above that of Madrid (41.2) or Catalonia (45.5),” explained the regional minister.

Hospitals in Andalucía have also ensured that Andalucía tops the list for the number of liver transplants in the country, with 246, followed by Madrid with 213 and Catalonia with 206. It also ranks second for kidney transplants, with 703, and for lung transplants, with 98.

“The solidarity of the people of Andalucía and the efforts of healthcare professionals continue to give us reasons to feel proud in the field of organ donation and transplants,” said Sanz.

In 2025, Andalusian hospitals carried out a total of 1,113 organ transplants, the second-highest figure on record after the record set in 2024 with 1,222, and 7.64 per cent more than in 2023, when 1,034 transplants were carried out,” explained the regional minister.

Of the total number of transplants carried out last year, 703 were kidney transplants, 246 were liver transplants, 98 were lung transplants, 48 were heart transplants and 18 were pancreas transplants.
