Uroš Tošković was born in 1932 near Podgorica (Pelev Brijeg, Montenegro). In 1952, he graduated from the Secondary Art School in Herceg Novi, and in 1957, he graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts in Belgrade, in the class of Academician Marko Čelebonović.

From an early age, he experienced the horrors of war and great poverty, which had an impact on his artistic expression. He became interested in art early on, drawing dead soldiers and horses which he saw around him. These tragic scenes of suffering are deeply embedded in the poetics of his works, which is associated with the aesthetics of art brut. He was one of the founders of the Balthazar Friends Society, which later developed into the Mediala group.

From 1957, he lived in Paris, where, as a scholarship holder of the French government, he completed the École des Beaux-Arts under Maurice Brianchon.

He remained in the French capital until 1977, where he had several solo and group exhibitions. He travelled to the USA twice, to New York in 1967, and to Los Angeles and Arizona in 1969.

From 1977 to 1996, he lived and worked in Belgrade. In 1996, he moved to Montenegro, where he remained for the rest of his life. The Government of the Republic of Montenegro awarded him the 13th July Award in 1987. He was recognised as a prominent cultural figure of Montenegro in 2010. In the same year, he received a special award for original expression from the World Gallery for Art on Paper Osten in Skopje.

Tošković’s works are believed to have been lost in numerous moves and the turmoil of everyday existence. Over the course of his seven-decade artistic career, he held around 50 solo exhibitions and participated in a similar number of group exhibitions in Serbia and abroad. His works are held in many museum and private collections in Serbia and around the world.

He died in 2019 in Podgorica.
